AN ORDINANCE REQUIRING REGISTRATION OF
GENERAL CONTRACTORS
WHERF~_S, the demand for residential, commercial and industrial
construction in the City of Jeffersonville is strong; and
WHEREAS, such strong demand has encouraged many persons who
work in the construction trades to become general contractors; and
WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville (the
"Council"), on the recommendation of the Jeffersonville Building
Commissioner, believes that registration of all persons acting as general
contractors in the City and its Fringe Zoning Area is necessary to protect the
health, safety and welfare of the Jeffersonville's landowners and citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY ORDAINED by the Council
that effective March 1, 1999 all general contractors building new construction,
or making alterations or repairs to existing construction, on structures:
totaling more than ,500 square feet, or having a cost to the ultimate owner over
$,5,000.00 shall register annually with the Jeffersonville Building
Commissioner; and
IT IS HEREBY FURTHER ORDAINED, that each annual
registration must include any information that the Building Commissioner
reasonably requests including, but not limited to, a list of subcontractors the
general contractor employs, a statement of the general contractor's bonding
limits, a copy of the general contractor's current certificate(s) of insurance and
a statement of the general contractor's qualifications and previously-completed
building projects; and
IT IS HEREBY FURTHER ORDAINED, that the general contractor
must pay a reasonable registration fee with each annual registration, which fee
shall be set periodically by the Jeffersonville Board of Public Works and
Safety; and
IT IS HEREBY FURTHER ORDAINED that said registration shall
be considered public record and shall be available for inspection by members
of the public at all reasonable times; and
IT iS HEREBY FURTHER ORDAINED that any general contractor
who fails to register annually with the Building Commissioner may not obtain
building permits from the Building Commissioner's office.
This Ordinance shall be in fhll force and effect from and after its passage and
approval.
