HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-28-2006MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA June 28, 2006 Mayor Waiz called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and on call of the roll those members present were: City Engineer Miller and Councilperson McCauley. Also present were: Fire Chief Miles, Assistant Police Chief Lovan, Animal Shelter Director Wilder, Vehicle Maintenance Director Drury, Building Commissioner Segraves, City Attorney Merkley, Parks Director Pof£, Personnel Director Calabro, Street Commissioner Ellis, Councilperson Wilson, Councilperson Perkins, Planning and Zoning Director Hicks, Redevelopment Director Cahill, and Deputy Clerk Mayfield. Engineer Miller made the motion to approve the payroll, seconded by Councilperson McCauley and carded unanimously. Engineer Miller made the motion to approve the minutes of 6-7-06 and 6-14-06, seconded by Conncilperson McCauley and carried unanimously. OLD BUSINESS APPLEBY'S REQUEST Councilperson Perkins along with Vicki Appleby came before the Board last week to request the Board to consider permitting Appleby's to extend their sidewalk in front of their restaurant out to accommodate more outside dining. The Board took it under advisement. Engineer Miller said he received a quote of $14,845.00 from E.T. Huff to extend the sidewalk out. Engineer Miller made the motion to table this until next week, seconded by Councilperson McCauley but Mayor Waiz said he is concerned that allowing Appleby's to do this will set a precedence and others will want to do the same which will lessen the amount of parking spaces on Spring Street. Engineer Miller amended his motion to table and denied the request to extend the sidewalk out in front of Appleby's, seconded by Councilperson McCauley and carded unanimously. PERRIN LANE SIDEWALK BID Jorge Lanz of Jacobi, Toombs, and Lanz recommended the Board award the contract to do the Perrin Lane Sidewalk to Teem Contracting. Engineer Miller made the motion to award the contract to Team Contracting in the emount of $239,980.00, seconded by Councilperson McCanley and carried unanimously. NEW BUSINESS MEADOWS DETENTION BASIN AND DRAINAGE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT Jorge Lanz of Jacobi, Toombs, and Lanz opened bids from: Gohmann Asphalt and Construction- $1,551,649.50 Pace Contracting LLC- $1,386,000.00 Temple and Temple Excavating and Paving- $1,192,327.00 Councilperson McCauley made the motion to take the bids under advisement, seconded by Engineer Miller and carded unanimously. TENTH ST. ROAD CUT REQUEST Attorney Gillenwater, on behalf of Jemes Mull who has an auto repair business on Clairview Drive wants to put an entrance in on Tenth Street for easier access to his business. Engineer Miller voiced concern with people pulling in and out of Swifty gas station, which is next to the proposed road cut. Engineer Miller said he would take a look at the location along with Mayor Waiz. Engineer Miller made the motion to table until next, seconded by Councilperson McCauley and carried unanimously. TRAFFIC PROBLEM IN ALLEY Alma Barry of 318 E. Park Place spoke to the Board about her problem backing out of her garage into the alley. She said visibility is sometimes poor and that certain neighbors drive through the alley at a high rate of speed. She asked if signage is possible. Mayor Waiz said a sign would be posted and Assistant Police Chief Lovan said he would send an officer out to speak with the person who is driving too fast through the alley. FIRE DEPARTMENT TITLE CHANGE Fire Chief Miles asked the Board's approval to change the title of Crew Chief to Battalion Chief. Councilperson McCauley made the motion to approve the title of Crew Chief to Battalion Chief, seconded by Engineer Miller and carded unanimously. PURCHASE ORDER SYSTEM Mayor Waiz and Councilperson McCauley talked about having a workshop with all Department heads, the City Clerk Treasurer, and a representative or two from the Council to get input from everyone in regard to the system. Couneilperson McCauley said it is not designed to inhibit or cause administrative headaches. It is highly recommended by IACT as well as others. There being no further discussion to come before the Board, City Engineer Miller made the motion to adjourn the meeting at 10:20 a.m., seconded by Councilperson McCauley and earned unanimously.
