HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-26-2004MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA MAY 26, 2004 Mayor Waiz called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. and on call of the roll those members present were: Councilperson Sellers and Engineer Miller. Also present were: Building Commissioner Segraves, Street Commissioner Ellis, Asst. Police Chief Lovan, Coordinator Davis, Personnel Director Calabro, Redevelopment Director Becker, Animal Shelter Director Wilder, Parks Director Poff, City Attorney Merkley and Deputy Clerk Mayfield. City Engineer Miller made the motion to approve the payroll as presented, seconded by Councilperson Sellers and carried unanimously. City Engineer Miller made the motion to approve the minutes of 5-12-04, seconded by Councilperson Sellers and carried unanimously. .OLD BUSINESS Wally Blankenship who had appeared before the Board previously spoke to the Board about his disapproval of the 3 way stop sign at Buttonwood and Charlestown Pike. He said he had requested an accident list and a traffic survey for Charlestown Pike but never received one. He xvould like the sign removed and says there is no justification for it. Mayor Waiz told him the sign wouldn't be removed because of motorists exceeding the speed limit on that road. Mr. Blankenship said the canine demonsiration at the Optimist Club was fantastic. NEW BUSINESS STREET CLOSURE REQUEST Donnie Timberlake with James L. Shireman construction appeared before the Board to request the closure of half of Watt Street (Bucket's side) due to the jail construction for safety reasons. He said he has discussed this with the owner of Bucket's and she isn't pleased about it but she understands. After some discussion Engineer Miller made the motion to.take this under advisement for a week, seconded by Councilperson Sellers and carried unanimously. KEWANNA DRIVE AND PARK PLACE City Attorney Merkley said Councilperson Fetz called him and said he has concerns from neighbors on Kewarma Drive and Park Place about the need for a Slow-Children Playing sign in the area. They say motorists are speeding through the intersection and the area. Assistant Police Chief Lovan said he would step up patrols in the area to control speeding. Councilperson Sellers said she sees no problem with putting up a sign. Councilperson Sellers made the motion to approve putting a "Slow-Children Playing" sign, seconded by Mayor Waiz. COMMENTS: Mayor Waiz asked Building Commissioner Segraves the status of the house at the corner of Pearl Street and Maple Street. Mayor Waiz said he would like to see something done other that boarding it up. Street Commissioner Ellis said there would be another sweeper demonstration today at noon. Street Commissioner Ellis said low visibility areas where there are stop signs can be made more visible by putting reflectors in the poles. Mayor Waiz said he has Reverse Auction information. Street Commissioner Ellis said he has some trucks down so he's running behind on chipping limbs and picking up yard waste. Administrator Davis said Mayor Waiz got the price for a T-1 line 30% less than any bid he has gotten. Councilperson Sellers made the motion to approve a two-year contract with CINergy Communications for a T-1 line at $432.00 per month, seconded by Engineer Miller and carried unanimously. Nellie Knowland said there ~s water standing in her neighborhood. Street Commissioner Ellis will go out and look at it. Personnel Director Calabro passed out information for extra phones. Personnel Director said OSHA traimng is scheduled for June 10. 2004 for all department heads in the Mayor's conference room. Parks Director Poff asked Mayor Waiz if he could solicit help for the barge project. Mayor Waiz said he would get back with him. Animal Shelter Director Wilder said the Open House went well on Saturday. Asst. Police Chief Lovan asked Engineer Miller if construction signs could be put out on Veterans Parkxvay ro run radar. The speed limit during construction is 25 m.p.h. Engineer said ok. Mayor Waiz said he would like some trees planted to cover the Theatre X sign. He said when traveling from Clarksville to Jeffersonville on the park~vay the sign is very visible. Engineer Miller said he believes someone has the option to buy the property and may be putting something else there. He said something could be planted there in the meantime. Councilperson Sellers said she would tike to know who might be buying it and the time frame. Engineer Miller said he would try to get some information. Mayor's Night In is scheduled for Thursday night May 27, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. in Northaven subdivision weather permitting.
