July 25,
1994
From: Rick Elliott
Chief of Police
On Decembe~ 6th, 1971, I began my career as a police ~fficer with
the Jeffer~onville Police Department. Throughout my twenty-two and
a half years as a police officer I have held every rank from
Patrolman ~o Colonel, including nine years of ser¥ice in the
Detective Division. During my tenure I have serve~ under the
administrations of three mayors and six police chiefs~
I was appo~nte~ Chief of Police by Mayor Raymond J. ~arker, Jr.,
and began ~ervlng in that capacity on January 1st, 19~2.
,,~al when a~ointed Chief of Police, was to do eve .L~Ything in my
~w~ ~o ~rovi=d~ the citizens of Jeffe~son~i~? wi~h. t~e _~est
possible law enforcement available. I feeL, a~ Enls p~lnu in 51me,
"we" h~ve ~tain~d this goal. I use the wOrd "we" .be~use ~ would
be remiss ~n th~nking that I coul~ have~accompl~shed th~s goal
.without th~ dedication and cooperation of all of the ~mployees of
the JeffersDnville Police Department, including not only the police
officers, but also the civilian personnel as wall. Their
diligence, skill, commitment and determination to sei.~;e to their
fullest po~ential, has resulted in my being able to see my goal
attained i~ a mere two and a half years.
Therefore' it is with mixed'emotions, that I am announcing my
retirement, from the Jeffersonville Police Department. My decision
to do so ~as reached after much consideration. The!main factor
being, I /feel I have done the best possible job that I am
personall~ qualified to do, and I am confident that ~.he department
has reachA~ the level of excellence that I so d~sired and the
citizens 6~i our community most assuredly deserve. ~
I am fortunate to be able to continue~my service [o the city of
Jeffersonvitle in yet another capaczty?' I have accepted
position 6f Assistant Superinteh~en~ of P~"a~'~-~'Recreation~ as
second in charge to Superintendent, .Qonald Poole, Jr. I am looking
forward to the challenge of this .ne~ position and am grateful for
the ~pportunity to c~ntinue serving~this community.
AN EQUAL OPPOR'PJNFD~ E~PLOYER
Lastly, but most importantly, I would like to thank each and every
employee of the Jeffersonville Police Department for their
dedication, support and friendship throughout the years, and I
would like to extend a "special thank you" to Mayor Parker for
believing in my ability to serve as Chief of Police and affording
me the opportunity to do so.
It is with great pride that I say I was a Jeffersonville Police
Officer for twenty-two and a half years. It is due to this pride
that I chose to announce my retirement a~d the culmination of my
law enforcement career while holding the rank of Chief of Police,
the highest attainable position within the police department, a
fitting conclusion to a most rewarding career.
titude and appreciation,
Rick Elliott
