A Resolution of the Co~on Council of the
City of Jeffersonville, Indiana concerning
urban mass transportation.
WHEREAS, the City of Jeffersonville is presently served by the
urban mass transportation system designated as Home Transit, Incorporated;
and
WHEREAS, the management of Home Transit, Incorporated has formally
indicated that there is imminent danger that the system will be unable
to adequately serve the City of jeffersonville and that public acquisi-
tion of the system is necessary to render adequate service; and
WHEREAS, the City of New Albany and the Town of Clarksville are
also served by the urban mass transportation system of Home Transit,
Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, studies made by the Kentuckiana Regional Planning and
Development Agency have indicated that the financial position of the
system is such that the system is not able to render adequate service;
and
WHEREAS, the maintenance of an urban mass transportation system
rendering adequate service is essential to relieve traffic congestion
which would otherwise reduce the rapid and efficient movement of persons
and goods and emergency vehicles in and about all three communities;
and
~ WHEREAS, the maintenance of an urban mass transportation system
rendering adequate service is necessary to the welfare of the general
public in that it expands the economic and social opportunltle available
to the residents of such cities and particularly for those who for economic
reasons, reasons of health, reasons of age or physical unfitness to operate
a motor vehicle, cannot freely move about except through the services
rendered by an urban transportation system; and
WHEREAS, Federal and State assistance are available to aid in the
maintenance of adequate urban mass transportation service;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City
of Jeffersonville hereby declares it is desirous of participating with
the City of New Albany and the ToWn of Clarksville in determining the
feasibility of, and possibility of forming a joint Public Transportation
Corporation for the purpose of acquiring the private transportation
system and operating same as a Public Transportation Corp.
