Court Avenue Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130 March 7, 2000 Ron Ellis, President Jeffersonville Common Council 501 E. Court Avenue Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130 Re~ Dear Ron: Special Appropriation This letter is to advise you and the rest of the Common Council that I am submitting a request for a special appropriation from Jeffersonville City Court Probation Users Fees. This additional appropriation is for education purposes for my Chief Probation Officer, Debra Gardner-Hughes, and myself. Currently there is only $500.00 available for both of us to use for attending education conferences. While this amount may have been sufficient in past years, there are two conferences I will be attending this year in addition to the yearly City and Town Court Judges Meeting in October. The first is sponsored by the Indiana Judicial Center concerning court-sponsored alcohol programs being held March 16-17, 2000. The other is sponsored by the National Judicial College. The course is specifically designed to meet the needs of judges with special court jurisdiction. Attendees will learn the basics of their judicial role in every area, including small claims, traffic court, misdemeanors and local violations. It is designed for full or part-time rural and urban court judges and is a two-week course held at the University of Nevada-Reno AugUst 14-25, 2000. In addition, Ms. Hughes will be attending a probation officer's conference more specifically designed to her caseload. She is also required to attend two Indiana conferences in April and October each year although these conferences focus primarily on felony and juvenile court probation. I will be available at the Common Council Meeting on March 20, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. should you or other council members have any questions. Sincerely, Vicki L. Carmichael, Judge
