HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000-R-04 RESOLUTION NO. 00-R- .~/ A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING COMMON COUNCIL ATTORNEY WHEREAS, Indiana law~ authorizes the Cormnon Council of the City of Jeffersonville to hire or contract with cornpetent attorneys and legal research assistants on terms the Common Council considers appropriate. WHEREAS, pursuant to Indiana law2 the employment of an attorney for the Common Council operates independent of the city department of law as established under I.C. 36~4-9. WHEREAS, pursuant to Indiana law3 the appropriations for salaries of attorneys and legal research assistants employed by the Common Council may not exceed the appropriations for similar salaries in the budget of the city department of law. WHEREAS, the city department of law is under the authority and direction of the executive. WHEREAS, the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville, as the city legislative body, desires to employ the services of a competent attorney (hereinafter called "Council Attorney") to provide independent legal services and advice to the Common Council. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville, that the Common Council shall employ a Council Attorney to provide legal services and advice independent of that provided by the city department of law. IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville shall advertise and solicit applications for the position of Council Attorney. IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that 'the Council Attorney shall only consider applicants who are: 1) licensed to practiCe law in the State of Indiana; 2) in good standing with the Indiana Supreme Court; and 3) have at least t~vo (2) years of experience. IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the Common Council shall establish a Search and Screen Committee consisting oftkree (3) Common Council members who shall conduct interviews of each qualified applicant for the position of Council Attorney. ~Currently I2C. IT IS FURTHER RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville shall appropriate sufficient funds for the employment of the Council Attorney. IT IS FURTItER RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville shall approve the contract and employment of the Council Attorney. Galligan}M~fyor/ / COMMON COUNCIL CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE STATE OF INDIANA ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR COUNCIL ATTORNEY The Common Council of Jeffersonville is seeking to retain an attorney on a part-time contractual basis. The Council attorney shall attend meetings of the Council and furnish such advice, information, and opinion as may be required concerning the business of such Council to draft ordinances, orders, resolutions, and motions as directed by such Council, and persecute and defend actions involving such Council, and to provide such other services relative to the affairs of the Council as may be required. Applicants for such position shall 1) be licensed to practice law in the State of Indiana; 2) be in good standing with the Indiana Bar; and 3) have at least two (2) years of experience as practicing attorney. Those interested must submit their resume to the Search and Screen Committee, c/o Clerk-Treasurer Office, 4th Floor, City County Building, deffersonville, Indiana 47130 no later than Noon on January 12, 2000.
