HomeMy WebLinkAbout1990-R-07RESOLUTION NO. 90-R-__~ RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONTINUED OPERATION OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY AMMUNITION PLANT IN CLARK COUNTY, INDIANA WHEREAS, the Common council of the City of jeffersonville is aware that the Secretary of Defense has included the United States Army Ammunition Plant located on Highway 62 in CLark County, Indiana, for possible closure as a part of its budget cutting plan for the 1990's; and, WHEREAS, the ,'improvements" the Army Ammunition Plant is during its years of operation condition in which it will feasible basis the economically premises to made to the property on which located which have been made have left the property in a be virtually impossible on an to effectuate a cleanup of the point that the property could be returned to both the public and private sectors for appropriate development if the plant is in fact closed in order to lessen the economic impact of such closure; and, WHEREAS, the forced layoff of those employed at the United States Army Ammunition Plant will obviously have an adverse effect upon the local economy which in all likelihood cannot be replaced by a development of the subject property itself for other uses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Common Council of the City of jeffersonville hereby expresses its position in opposition to the closure and. mothballing of the United States Army Ammunition Plant in Clark County, Indiana. The Common Council would urge a thorough study of the utility of the plant within the present framework of the defense establishment, of the actual conditions of the property on which the United States Army Ammunition Plant is located, and of the realistic closure costs associated with this plant. The Common Council would full in an actual cost the facility as other ammunition urge that the plant be closed only if it appears after a and thorough review that this closure will quickly result savings to the American taxpayer, and that it presently exists is less effective than facilities owned and operated by the United States Department of Defense. Finally, the Common Council is unalterably opposed to any plan which would mothball the United States Army Ammunition Plant in Clark County, Indiana, for an indefinite period of time as the closure of the plant combined with the nondevelopment of the subject property would have a continuing, unmitigated devastating effect upon the economy and development of Clark County, Indiana, and the immediate jeffersonville area.
