Jeffersonville Public Art Commission August 9 , 2021 John McCarthy called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m. Attendees: Abby Richmer Rosey Callahan Denise Freville Emily Dippie John McCarthy Teah Williams-Hampton Susan Harrison Sarah Young Kofi Darku Guest: Brian Bell Old Business: Approve Minutes from JPAC Meeting—July 12, 2021 meeting-Sarah makes motion to approve minutes as written, seconded by Denise Freville. Passes unanimously. Name Mural Report—Emily Dippie Chelsea Hart is artist selected, and name mural with be finished by September 25, 2021. We had a lot of good submissions but I believe everyone will love this one, says Denise Freville. Library Collaboration Update—Emily Dippie Donor for next year has been secured Every child that gets a new library card will also receive a free coloring book for us. Secured first ate of delivery of 100 coloring books, which will be next week Library is having a reception to kick this project off scheduled for September 9, 2021, 5:30—6:30 p.m. at the Library. New Business: Executive Director of Southern Indiana Arts Alliance—Brian Bell Emily introduces guests, I invited Brian here tonight so everyone could meet him. Brian wrote and secured the grant for Digital Art Gallery. Hello, I am Brian with Southern Indiana Arts Alliance we cover all of Southern Indiana, no specific community but all. We are very excited to begin our partnership with JPAC, we will be using this as a pilot program, depending on how it goes here we will plan to do in New Albany and Corydon, said Brian Bell. Digital committee met about content possibility for gallery, we can display artists, and community event. We will get to have nine boards instead of the 6 originally planned, said Emily. How are we going to work the technical part of what is on the boards?Asks John. I believe we discussed that Emily will have control of the gallery boards, said Brian. The boards that will be installed belong to JPAC. Second program I am here to discuss with you tonight is NEA Big Read— We have brought on partners for this project and it will run from October—January plan to distribute 800-1,000 books throughout Southern Indiana. We have chosen the book "House on Mango Street"for this and each library has the option of how many books are put into their communities. What is age range for this?Asks Sarah Young. 12 and up is our target audience and eventually we could find something for the younger kids, say Brad. Right now we have 6 partner at $1,500.00 each, which is just paying for the books, each community get to do their own workshops, but we will be doing a lot of signage, social media, and campaign banners for this. Thank you for coming in we will discuss possibility of partnering with you this evening and I will touch base with you as soon as I know something, says Emily Dippie. Kofi Darku joined meeting at 6:12 p.m. Hybrid Policy—Emily Dippie This policy is just to protect the Commission, and it's the same policy most all of other City boards have taken. If we decide to adopt this policy we will present it to the City Council for final approval. This policy allows us to do meetings virtually, if half are in person, and half via zoom. There would be no voting rights with budget issues via zoom, says Emily. I will need advance notice if you will need to participate by zoom to control numbers. Susan Harrison makes motion to accept policy, seconded by Rosey Callahan, motion passes unanimously. Story Trail—Emily Dippie We have a new Author Avi. We will have a small event, invitation only,August 28, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. We met with Avi and his Grandmother, and they met with an illustrator, because Avi does not draw So I believe this is going to be great on the story trail, says Rosey What a great experience, says Sarah. I will be meeting with Ava, the author of the last story at the story trail tomorrow, and would love to invite her to event, if that's okay with everybody. Says Rosey. Emily says,yes, please. Digital Gallery Update—Emily Dippie Launch date is, October 16, I have to talk with distributor. We are looking for our first artist, and will need to. be a specific type person, we talked about this person putting on workshops and things. In October the photo biannual will still be going on so maybe we could find something there, says Susan. Deborah Brawnstein has beautiful pictures, says Abbigail. How would you like us to recommend someone?Asks Sarah. Send me name and contact information and I need them prior to September 1, says Emily. I really want to lay ground work for this since we are the pilot for other communities, says Sarah. One last thing, we need a name for this project so be thinking about it, says Emily. Committee Report: Small Scale Sculptures—Emily Dippie Will be having a big event, September 25, 2021, 1:00 p.m. -3:00 p.m. Jeffrey's Journey will begin at Overlook and head toward NOCO. Walk is one mile from start to finish. I would like to have activities for kids, cookies, entertainment, after formal ribbon cutting ceremony. I will be putting together a pamphlet for the sculptures, says Emily. Ava Grantz,first story trail author will be writing Jeffrey's Journey. NOCO Arts Mobile—Samtec Grant—Emily Dippie We received a grant for$13,000.00 through Samtec, so we plan to move forward with the NOCO Arts Mobile (John made a wonderful design of Art Mobile, with edible tires). This is a 2022 project correct?Asks, Sarah. Yes pretty much, says Emily. We will be doing a formal call for committee next month for this project, says Emily. Planning for next year—Emily Dippie September—decide on our path "theme"for 2022 October—If you have a project you feel passionate about please let us know. November—finalize—will be making the hard choices as to what goes on docket and what gets cut for 2022. I have had a few artists reach out to me, so I plan to reach out to them and see what ideas they have for upcoming projects. Commissioner's Comments: Susan—September 3'& 5 h for invitations?
