ORDINANCE REGULATING THE DESTRUCTION OF
ANIMAL CARCASSES
WHEREAS, the Jeffersonville-Clark County Animal Shelter has the facilities and
the ability to provide for the disposal of animal carcasses; and
WHEREAS, providing such services results in additional expense to the City of
Jeffersonville; and
WHEREAS, it would be unfair to expect the taxpayers of the City of Jeffersonville
to subsidize the cremation of animal remains from persons residing in other taxing districts
which do not contribute to the funding of the Jeffersonville Animal Shelter.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED by the Common Council of the City of
Jeffersonville, that the following rates shall be established for the processing and
destruction of animal carcasses:
DEFINITIONS
(1) Animal - shall mean any vertebrate organism, other than human beings,
having an aggregate weight of more than two (2) pounds.
(2) Burial - shall mean the act or conduct of placing an object in the ground at
a depth of at least three (3) feet at the shallowest point.
CARCASSES TO BE IN PRESERVED STATE
The Jeffersonville Animal Shelter shall only be responsible to handle an,imal
carcasses which have been preserved in a state to prevent decomposition of the animal
carcass. Carcasses which are in an unhealthy state of decomposition shall not, at the
discretion of the Jeffersonville Animal Shelter, be disposed of.
FEES FOR DESTRUCTION OF ANIMAL CARCASSES
The fee to be charged for the destruction of animal carcasses shall be $1.00 per
animal, however, an additional $1.00 shall be charged for every five (5) pounds of weight
of the animal carcass.

consistent with the terms of this ordinance. However, it shall be unlawful for any person
to dispose of or dump an animal carcass in the City of Jeffersonville, Indiana in a manner
inconsistent with the health codes of the State of Indiana. Any person who disposes of
an animal carcass in a manner other than burial or by cremation will have violated this
ordinance. The improper disposal of each animal carcass constitutes a separate offense
under this ordinance.
PENALTIES
A person who violates this ordinance by failure to pay the aforesaid fees or by
improper disposal or destruction of an animal carcass shall be fined and amount not less
than $50.00 and more than $500.00.
EFFECTIVE DATE
This ordinance shallpecome effective fIfteen (15) days after its final publication
following its passage and timely approval by the Mayor.
Passed and adopted by the Common Council of City of Jeffersonville, Clark
