A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING GOLD MEDAL WINNER—ANDRE SHELBY BY THE COMMON COUNCIL OF
THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE,CLARK COUNTY, INDIANA.
WHEREAS,Jeffersonville, Indiana is the hometown of many remarkable athletes, accomplished scholars
and successful business people;
WHEREAS, it is the hometown of only one Olympic Gold Medal winner, Paralympic Games Gold
Medalist ANDRE SHELBY;
Andre was born in Jeffersonville in 1968;
Andre graduated from Jeffersonville High School in 1985;
Andre was an accomplished athlete throughout his youth in Jeffersonville;
One week after graduating from Jeffersonville, high School Andre jointed the United States Navy
He is the father of two daughters, the son of Jeffersonville natives and a brother, uncle, cousin of many
of our city's finest residents;
Andre served our country for 18% years until he was injured in a motorcycle accident in 2004, which
confined him to a wheelchair.
Andre refused to allow his disability to stop him from exhibiting his tenacity and commitment to
excellence in an undertaking he choose;
He took up archery and began to compete fervently;
In 2016,Andre made the United States Paralympic Archery Team. He travelled to Rio as the 111h seed in
a 12 person field;
Andre left Rio with a Gold Medal. He won the Olympic competition. He won the Olympic competition by
defeating Italy's Alberto Simnelli 144-143;
Andre was the first African American to ever win a Gold Medal in the Para-Olympics on that day as well;
Andre's life and accomplishments in the face of adversity are a testament to his family, his friends, his
faith and we hope in some way the lessons he learned while spending his youth with us here in
Jeffersonville, Indiana;

WHEREFORE, in recognition of his athletic accomplishments, his strength of character, his service to our
country and his service this community we resolve that today AUGUST 7, 2017 SHALL BE PROCLAIMED
ANDRE SHELBY APPRECIATION DAY IN JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA.
This Ordinance shall be in full force and effect from and after its passage by the Common
Council and approval of the Mayor.
