Council President Ron Ellis, with Clerk Treasurer Peggy Wilder at the desk, called the meeting to order at 5:05 PM. Other Councilpersons present were Barbara Wilson, Les Merkley, Rob Waiz, Ron Grooms, Vicki Conlin and Denny Frantz. Council President Ron Ellis presented the budget calendar prepared by Clerk Treasurer Wilder, and dates were set for the 2001 budget planning session. Council President Ron Ellis then discussed a Resolution presented by Councilperson Frantz endorsing the purchase of land for use as a fire station in the Eastern portion of Jeffersonville. Council President Ellis has a problem with obligating the council to fired an ambiguous amount of money. Councilperson Frantz stated that the Council needs to act quickly because the purchase prices are rising and availability is lessening. Councilperson Merkley recommended changing Resolution to say "attempt" at funding. Councilperson Grooms believes this is a good idea because it allows city administration to begin looking for property location. The Council discussed potential locations and agreed the fire station is necessary. Councilperson Frantz has no problem with the changes, and the Resolution will be presented with changes for approval at the regular meeting. Councilperson Ellis discussed request by NAACP youth for funding the convention trip. A discussion was had regarding other groups asking for funding, and where the line was to be drawn. Councilperson Wilson believes this is similar to the Youth Commission and we can't afford the additional funding at this time. Council President Ellis believes the youth should be responsible for obtaining their own donations. The Council agreed that no action would be taken at the Council meeting. Councilperson Frantz would like to honor Sara Nord, Miss Indiana high school basketball player and suggested the Steamboat Days parade. Conncilperson Wilson attends the meetings and will let the Council know what the schedule is. Councilperson Ellis discussed the National Convention, and that the Clerk Treasurer is getting a credit card for the Council to make reservations. There being no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 5:55 PM. ATTEST: Council President Ron E/l/s
