HomeMy WebLinkAbout03-27-2000 WorkshopMINUTES OF THE WORKSHOP SESSION OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA March 27, 2000 The Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville met in Workshop session in the Mayor's Conference Room in the City County Building, Jeffersonville, Indiana on the 27th day of March, 2000. The meeting was called to order at 5:10 p.m. by Council President Ron Ellis, with Clerk Treasurer Peggy Wilder at the desk. Other Councilpersons in attendance were Barbara Wilson, Vicki Coniin, Les Merkley, Rob Waiz and Ron Grooms. Council Person Denny Frantz was absent. Clerk Treasurer Peggy Wilder presented information on keeping minutes for public meetings, and what groups require public meetings. F.O.P. President Danny Rodden discussed a mistake in the F.O.P. contract, noting that the job of Squad Commander had been inverted with that of Major. The contract should reflect the position of Squad Commander as a higher rank than the po ~sition of major. City Attorney Anne Marie Galligan will present an Ordinance reflecting this change at the April 3rd, 2000 meeting. City Court Judge Vicky Carmichael explained a request to increase the City Court Education budget. The increase would be transferred from the Probation User Fund, with the goal of developing more programs to be run by City Court resulting in fees collected that typically go to the state. Fire Chief Mike Smith presented information in regard to a dive and rescue team, in conjunction with the Jeffersonville Police Dpartment. Handouts outlining the cost of training were given to the Council. Chief Smith indicated an increase in water rescue runs, as a result of growth and activity on the river and in rural lakes and ponds recently incorporated into city limits. Chief Smith will begin training with his current budget, and request money for capitol purchases in the Fire Department 2001 budget. City Council President Ron Ellis discussed a $50,000 match necessary for the Boy's and Girl's Club project. This is to be on the April 3~a agenda of the regular meeting of the Common Council. Clerk Treasurer Peggy Wilder went over the special appropriations approved and denied by the State Board of Tax Commissioners. Council Person Ron Grooms requested that the City Council members formulate questions to use in the interview process for the Sanitary Sewer Board. Council members posed 10 questions taken by President Ron Ellis. Inter~ews will be held at an April 3 workshop in 20-minute intervals. Police Chief Mike Pavey addressed the position of Safety Director, which is currently held by Danny Rodden, a Jeffersonville Police Officer. He would like to put the position in his budget under the title of Squad Commander. The money is in the budget for the current year, but would require a change in the salary ordinance. This is to be presented to the Council for a formal vote at the regular meeting of the Common Council on April 3rd, 2000.
