FIRE MERIT COMMISSION
Thursday, December 7, 2012
The Jeffersonville Fire Merit Commission held a Regular Meeting on Thursday,
December 7, 2012 in the First Floor City Council Room, 500 Quartermaster Court,
Jeffersonville, IN.

Clark Miles — Board Member

CALL TO ORDER:
Mr. Akermon called the meeting to order at 6:0PM — all commissioners were present.
MINUTES:
Mr. Ervin made a motion to accept the minutes of the November 1 n 2012. Ms. Barrow
seconded — motion passed unanimously.
OLD BUSINESS:
- Mr. Adams handed out the Jeffersonville Fire Department 2012 Promotional
Results List. Mr. Ervin made a mode to accept the list; Ms. Barrow seconded —
motion passed unanimously. Each applicant on the list will receive a packet with
their test scores and information on the testing.
- Mr. Adams had a letter from Chief Hedrick asking for two (2) sergeants to be
promoted. Mr. Adams will send the Chief a letter stating who are the top three (3)
on the certified list.
NEW BUSINESS:
- The Commissioners would like to set up a two (2) year calendar. Ms. Barrow will
work on it. The Commissioners would also like to have a workshop to discuss the
tactical and promotional interview questions.
- Questions from the Floor:
1. Q - If someone declines their promotion, what will happen to them on the
list?
A — Their name would go to the.lae o the list.
2. B. Hopf— he had six (6) months in the Reserves — does that time count
towards his time in rank?
A — Yes it does count towards his rank.
3. Q — J. Thompson — he had 1 year six (6) months on line in rank and then went
to Administration. Mr. Thompson had a hire date of 8/2010; he spoke to the
Chief and said that he would take the promotional test — even though he did
not have 2 years in rank.
Ms. Barrow left the meeting.
After additional discussions regarding Mr. Thompson and time in rank, Mr. Fry made a
motion to un- certify the 2012 Promotional List; Mr. Miles seconded — motion passed
unanimously.
Mr. Ervin made a motion to recertify the 2012 Promotion List and delete Mr.
Thompson's name; Mr. Fry seconded — motion passed unanimously.
4. Q — If three (3) positions in rank are open — how many names would the
Merit Commission provide?
A — The Merit Commission would provide four (4) names.
Chief Hedrick asked if another hearing date had been set for Mr. Johns. Mr. Adams
responded that a date has not yet been set. He felt that Mr. Wilder (Mr. John's attorney)
may drop the request to take depositions and may be discussing issues with Mr. Lowe
(City attorney). Due to the level of offense and that it has already be brought to the Merit
Commission — Mr. Johns cannot seek and outside agreement. All decisions must be
made by the Commission.
Mr. Ervin will contact the Louisville Fire officials who participated in the 2012
Promotional Testing and invite them to attend the meeting on January 17.
Upcoming meetings include:
1/3/2013 — 5:00 Executive Meeting — To be held in the Mayor's Conference RM
6:00 Regular Open Meeting
1/17/2013 — 6:00 — Special meeting to discuss the tactile test questions
To be held in the Council Chambers, 1 Floor
ADJOURNMENT:
Mr. Miles made a motion to adjourn; Mr. Frey seconded — motion passed unanimously.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:10PM.
