WHEREAS, alcohol is the number one drug problem among the nation's youth; and WHEREAS, nearly 1/3 of the nation's high school seniors have had five or more drinks in a row in the past two weeks; and WHEREAS, purchase and possession of alcohol by people under the age of 21 is illegal in all 50 states; and WHEREAS, approximately 2/3 of teenagers who drink report that they can buy their own alcoholic beverages; and WHEREAS, use of alcohol is associated with the leading causes of death and injury among youth, including motor vehicle crashes, homicides and suicides; and WHEREAS, drinking at an early age is an indicator of future alcohol problems; and WHEREAS, enforcement of the legal drinking age is an adult responsibility; Now, therefore, The Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville does hereby proclaim that April 1994 is Alcohol Awareness Month in Jeffersonville, Indiana. As the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville, Indiana, we also call upon all citizens, parents, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, hospitals and schools in Clark County to help raise awareness about this critical public health issue and join us in "drawing the line" to prevent under age drinking.
