HomeMy WebLinkAbout1-11-2012 MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA January 11 2012 Mayor Moore called the meeting to order at 9:34 a.m. and on the call of roll members present were Engineering Coordinator Rick Lovan with Vehicle Maintenance Director William Vissing sitting in for Councilperson Lisa Gill. Also present was: Animal Shelter Director Sarah Green, Fire Chief Eric Hendrick, information Technology Director Roger Hardy, Parks Superintendent Paul Northam. Building Commissioner Russ Segraves, City Engineer Andy Crouch, WWTP Director Len Ashack, Street Commissioner David Hosea, Police Chief Chris Grimm. Safety Director Michael Ogg, Controller Monica Harmon, Redevelopment Director Rob Waiz, Corporation Counsel Tom Lowe. City Attomey Les Merkley, and Deputy Clerk Erica Burress. Engineering Coordinator Rick Loan made a motion to approve the minutes from December 280 . 2011 and January 5 2012 with Vehicle Maintenance Director William Vissing seconding the motion and passing on a vote of 3-0. Engineering Coordinator Rick Lovan made a motion to approve payroll with Vehicle Maintenance Director seconding the motion and passing on a vote of 3 -0. Old Business None New Business 1. David Hosea- handicap parking sign Street Commissioner David Hosea proposed an approval of a handicap parking sign on the behalf of Joseph Hackney at 301 W. 8 Street. Mayor Moore asked if Mr. Hackney already had a handicapped sticker for his vehicle and Mr. Hosea stated that he did. Engineering Coordinator Rick Lovan made a motion to approve with Vehicle Maintenance Director William Vissing seconding the motion and passing unanimously. 2. Reese Rush - lights and speed humps at Lacassange drive Discussion was brought to the table concerning possible speed humps and lights at Lacassange drive. Mayor Moore suggested waiting until March to discuss speed humps and future speed humps decisions. Street Commissioner David Hosea agreed with this decision due to the possibility of damage to the snow truck vehicles over the winter from the speed humps. Mayor Moore confirmed the decision to wait until March to discuss' speed humps and to also look into street lights at that time. 3. Russ Segraves- City Hall renovation Building Commissioner Russ Segraves proposed an approval of the city hall renovations totaling an estimated $51,000 and beginning within five days of approval. Mayor Moore questioned if approval was needed by the Building Authority also and City Attomey Les Merkley responded that only the Board of Public Works needs to approve before the renovation can begin. Engineering Coordinator Rick Lovan also made comment to the board that some in -house work will be done as well that is not a part of the estimated amount for the renovation. Additional comments: • Citizen, Terri Hicks, brought concerns to the board concerning the neighborh• •d of Crystal Springs and ways to make it a safer place for neighborhood kids. M -. Hicks presented a neighborhood survey to the board that was shows suggesti •ns for the neighborhood regarding speed humps, street lights, neighborhood wat h signs, and children at play signs. Mrs. Hicks agreed to wait until spring to dis ss speed humps and street lights as previously suggested by the mayor. Police Chief Grimm was able to address the Neighborhood watch signs request and stated that all requests must go through either Officer Glenn Jackson or Offi• Josh Lynch. There was some discussion between the board and Mrs. Hicks about placing "children at play" signs in the neighborhood to make drivers mo aware of the children among the neighborhood. Mayor Moore brought up concem that many neighbors may agree to place the signs up in the neighborhood, but they usually do no agree to have them placed in their yard - nd the Mayor suggested finding a common area to place them. Mrs. Terri Hicks continued to express concem about safety in the neighborhood and suggest= • that having more police patrol could help control the amount of speeding and running through the stop signs that are currently in place. Police Chief Grimm made the suggestion that any concerns pertaining to speeding or disregarding of stop signs could be reported to the Police department and that would help pia. more patrol on a specific area. Mayor Moore said that he would look into seei • if it is possible to move one of the stop signs to a more visible place for drivers, preferably in the intersection of Reese Way and Crystal Springs.
