City Hall Council Chambers The Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville met in Special Session on Monday, June 21, 2010. Council President Nathan Samuel called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M., and on call of the roll those members present were: Councilpersons Mike Smith, Ed Zastawny, Connie Sellers, Bat•bara Wilson, Ron Grooms, and Nathan Samuel. Also present were, Council Attorney Greg Clark, City Attorney Datren Wilder, and Deputy Clerk Treasurer Barbara Hollis. Ms. Maxine Brown and Mr. Gary Leavell appeared before the Council on behalf of the African American Heritage Trail and The Depot. Mr, Leavell presented the ftnancial report for the Depot. He asked the Council to start thinking about what part the City can play in the African American Heritage Trail and the Depot. Ms. Maxine Brown said work has been done on the project for about five years, with the Depot for one and one half years. The Depot is a welcome center and minority training site with a limited menu, having to do with entrepreneurship. The building is a stepping stone. This is a unique project with na others in the State. She is working on conferences to came to the Depot and tour. She is asking to have help continue. Councilperson Smith noted an article in the newspaper regarding the New Albany history. Mt•. Leavell asked that the concept of this type of tourism be embraced. A lot of opportunity has been uncovered. Council President Samuel asked if the Tourism Bureau has been involved. Ms. Brown asked if the Council feels the pride she feels. Councilperson Zastawny asked if it is felt this could be successful. Mr. Leavell said that as far as the Depot paying for itself, the answer is no. He looks at it as a sense of pride. Councilperson Zastawny asked how success is measured. Mr. Leavell said that understanding history is a sense of pride. Council President Samuel suggested talking with Communication Director Thomas to get the word out. Mr. Leavell sees the Depot as a pivotal paint asking the City to provide rent on the building. He would like to see the City take it over as an information center. Ms. Brown asked the building be integrated into thinking. Councilperson Grooms volunteered his time to help with the presentation of the financial statement. He also suggested getting with the Economic Development Director and. the Communications Director. Ms. Brown said something needs to be done about the income. Mr. Leavell thanked the Council for the opportunity. He reminded all of Claysburg Days to be held August 6, 7, and 8, 2010. Police Chief Tim Deez•ingez• and Assistant Police Chief Kevin Morlan appeared before the Council to explain the need for approval of Fiscal Year 2010 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG} Program. Assistant Chief Morlan said the grant will provide funding for tasers and cartridges. Councilperson Sellers made the motion to approve the JAG Grant as requested, second by Councilperson Zastawny, passing on a vote of G-0. The meeting adjourned at 6:15 P•M.
