HomeMy WebLinkAbout06-09-2003 BOARD OF PARKS & RECREATION MINUTES OF MEETIN~ - ,TUNE 09, 2003 President Voyles called the meeting to order at Z2:03pm. The roll was called and those present were as follows: Ed Voyles, Sr., Clark Miles, Twyman Patterson, and 5ua Pfau. Absent: `Tohn Ueding and ,Tohn Young. Personnel and guest present were as follows: Superintendent Rick Elliott, Activities Director Rob Poll, Evening News City Editor ,Tohn Reiter, City Council members Barbara Wilson and Ran Grooms. Minutes: The April 2003 minutes were approved as submitted on a motion made by Sue Pfau, seconded by Twyman Patterson, carried unanimously. Old Business: None New Business: Activities Director Rob Poff addressed the board requesting approval to be part of a state pilot program that he would incorporate in our Summer Playground Program. He stated ~Teffersonville was one of seven cities throughout the state of ]~ndiana chosen to participate. He handed out flyers about the program and explained the program "Character Discovery Challenge" is a character development initiative created and facilitated by ]~ndY'Parks and Recreation as part of the NCAA Hall of Champions and Citizenship Through Sports Alliance's ,Stay in Bounds Program. He informed the program targets children ages 6-18 regardless of cultural, social, emotional or physical barriers. After discussion a motion was made by Twyman Patterson to approve inclusion of this program and requests to be updated after completion, seconded by Clark Miles, carried unanimously. Superintendent Rick Elliott addressed the board for approval of the 2003 Concerts in the Park dates. He passed out the scheduled and informed there are no conflicts at Warder Park. A motion was made to approve the 2003 schedule by Clark Miles, seconded by 5ua Pfau, carried unanimously. Superintendent Rick Elliott addressed the board for approval of the 2003 Farmers Market at Preservation Station. He informed they will continue to be set up on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings beginning in ,Tune and go through October. A motion was made to approve the 2003 Farmers Market by Twyman Patterson, seconded by Clark Miles, carried unanimously. Nachand Fieldhouse Monthly Repair: The April and May 2003 monthly reports were distributed for review. A motion was made to accept said reports by Twyman Patterson, seconded by 5ua Pfau, carried unanimously. Activities Director Rob Poff also passed out more information on the Banner Project discussed at the Board's March meeting. He also informed them of a midnight basketball program being held at the Nachand Fieldhouse from ~Tune 06th to August 01st. He stated in conjunction with the ,Toff Youth Commission end Grassroots (C.A.5.I.) they will open the gym up for youth 13-19 years old at no cost and will also included a ten minute session each night on tobacco and alcohol dangers. Rob concluded by informing the board he will update them on this program at their next scheduled meeting. Claims: The April 2003 claims were approved as submitted on a motion made by Twyman Patterson, seconded by 5ua Pfau, carried unanimously. The May 2003 claims were approved as submitted on a motion made Clark Miles, seconded by Twyman Patterson, carried unanimously. Correspondence: ,Superintendent Elliott informed three letters were received requesting donations. .Springhill Elementary/ .School .Spring Festival and Crusade for Children sponsored by ,Teffersonville Fire Department were each given one-season pass to the ,Toff Aquatic Center. And Animal Protection Association was given 12 one-day passes to the ,Toff Aquatic Center for their "Paws for a Wet Nose" event. Superintendent's Repo~: Rick informed the two backstops should be completed by week's end at Ewing Lane Park and reminded that one has been completed at Optimist Park. He also informed that he has been approached by Gayla Robinson, Director of Redeve{opment requesting the Parks Department involvement with a barge for the Torrance LaWn Project at the foot of Spring .Street. Rick stated he feels the project has merit but explained we would need funding in the Parks 2004 budget for annual maintenance and upkeep of the barge. He will continue to work with Gayla on this project and keep this board updated. Rick informed the board of a tree campaign at Mai jar Fields that Donnie and Donna Paola were instrumental in starting. He explained three types of trees (Pin Oak, Red Maple, and Aristocrat Pear) can be purchased for $125.00 in memory of, or in honor of, a special person or even as a team project. ]'he trees will be planted on the baseball property with a wooden plaque displaying the names/teams. I~ick concluded he would update accordingly on this campaign. Rick concluded by apologizing again that the opening of the pool was delayed to Saturday, May 31st. All members were informed and a news release was in the Evening News explaining that we failed to get required water quality report to the .State in time to open Memorial Day weekend. Announcements: Reminder that .Tuly is vacation month for this board and will not meet. The next scheduled meeting for this board will be on Monday, August 11, 2003. Adjournment: There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 12:45pm on a motion made by Twyman Patterson, seconded by Sue Pfau, carried unanimously.
