HomeMy WebLinkAboutJFMC April 3, 2025 FIRE MERIT COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA Regular Meeting City Council Chambers April 3, 2025 CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting for April 3, 2025, Fire Merit Commission was called to order by Commissioner McCormick at 6:00 P.M. ROLL CALL: The roll call was conducted and those present were Commissioners Troy McCormick, Donovan Sims, Sam Smith and Thomas Spalding. Commissioner Brooke Thomas was absent. COMMISSION STAFF: Fire Chief Shawn Grant, Deputy Fire Fire Merit Commission Counsel Zach Stewart, President Union Brad Tetley, Chief Jason Sharp and Stenographer Cindy Seifert GUESTS: Travis Herthel, Dave Kaskie, Rick VanGilder, Anne Langley and Kyle Patterson MINUTES: Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the minutes from March 6, 2025, seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 5-0. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Sims made the motion to approve the Amended Agenda, amended to add a claim, seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 5-0. CLAIMS: Attorney Stewart presented a claim in the amount of$3,388.72 for Ascension St Vincent for the psych & medical exams for hiring two new applicants. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to approve the claim in the amount of$3,388.72,to Ascension St Vincent, seconded by Commissioner Smith, passes on a vote of 4-0. OLD BUSINESS: ADMINISTRATION REQUEST FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF EXPERIENCED OFFICER LIST(RESOLUTION) Commissioner McCormick requested an updated version of the proposed Experienced Firefighter Applicant. He asked about the next steps in timeline once Resolution is approved. I Page 1 of 3 FILLING VACANCY IN RANK FOR RANK OF LIEUTENANT Attorney Stewart advised that Chief Grant has advised of 2 vacancies to be filled upon the retirement on April 15, 2025, in the rank of Lieutenant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to certify next three candidates for the rank of Lieutenant: Erik Northern,Charles Hollis and Michael Osborne,to Chief Grant,seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 3-0-1,Commissioner Smith abstained. Chief Grant recommends the promotion of Erik Northern to Lieutenant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to promote Erik Northern to Lieutenant,contingent on the retirement on April 15,2025,seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 3-0-1,Commissioner Smith abstained. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to certify next three candidates for the rank of Lieutenant: Charles Hollis and Michael Osborne, there being no third candidate on list, to Chief Grant, seconded by Commissioner Smith passes on a vote of 4-0. Chief Grant recommends the promotion of Charles Hollis to Lieutenant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to promote Charles Hollis to Lieutenant,contingent on the retirement on April 15, 2025,seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 4-0. FILLING VACANCY IN RANK FOR RANK OF SERGEANT Attorney Stewart advised that Chief Grant has advised of 2 vacancies to be filled upon the retirement on April 15, 2025, in the rank of Sergeant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to certify next three candidates for the rank of Sergeant:Todd Hoehn, Travis Herthel and Cameron Wolfe, to Chief Grant, seconded by Commissioner Smith, passes on a vote of 4-0. Chief Grant recommends the promotion of Todd Hoehn to Sergeant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to promote Todd Hoehn to Sergeant,contingent on the retirement on April 15,2025,seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 4-0. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to certify next three candidates for the rank of Sergeant: Travis Herthel,Cameron Wolfe and Matthew Mills,to Chief Grant,seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 4-0. Chief Grant recommends the promotion of Travis Herthel to Sergeant. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to promote Travis Herthel to Sergeant, contingent on the retirement on April 15, 2025, seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 4-0. FILLING VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT Attorney Stewart advised that Chief Grant has advised of 2 vacancies for firefighter to be filled upon the retirement on April 15, 2025. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to approve Anne Langley to begin contacting applicants from the Applicant List until 2 vacancies are filled, contingent on the retirement on April 15, 2025, seconded by Commissioner Smith, passes on a vote of 4-0. Page 2 of 3 ATTORNEY REPORT: No Report REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION: No Report REPORT ADMINISTRATION: Chief Grant advised that the city is moving forward with the Fire Territory. We will be very busy. FIRE MERIT COMMISSION COMMENTS: Commissioner McCormick advised that he likes to see the social media updates about the department.
