HomeMy WebLinkAboutJPAC February 10, 2025 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 2/10/2025 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room CALL TO ORDER • Administrator Wang welcomed everyone to the meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:44 p.m. • The meeting was held in person at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. ATTENDEES • Arts Administrator o Kathleen (Kat) Wang • Commissioners o Noah Aychby o Kimberly Freeman o Meredith Clipp-Rodriquez o Donna Reed o Monica Uhl o Sarah Young (Zoom) • Secretary o Joanna Peyron ABSENT • Dr. Allison Miller • Amy Semones GUEST ATTENDEE(S) • Andy Crouch, City Engineer OLD BUSINESS • Approve minutes from January 13, 2024 meeting o Commissioner Young motioned to approve the minutes. o Commissioner Freeman seconded. o The motion to approve the January 13, 2024 meeting minutes passed unanimously. • IUS Student to Use Studio Studio 4 ready (Administrator Wang) o Studio 4 is read and available o Commissioner Reed included Administrator Wang's information on the request to students to participate o No responses received to date o Commissioner Reed will push out the request again NEW BUSINESS 1 cc r' F 'CVNII '.F DATE: 2/10/2025 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm STAB°_, CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • Welcome new Commissioners (Administrator Wang) o Noah Aychby is an artist (illustration, painting, fabrication) and musician, who also does home remodeling o Meredith Clipp-Rodriquez is the Executive Director at Catalyst Rescue Mission o Kimberly Freeman is a co-lead for Clark County Moms of Hoosier Action o Open Commissioner position • There isn't a specific timeline for filling the open position • Commissioner Semones has a recommendation and is waiting for that person's biography in order for City Council to vote on the nomination • 2025 Calendar (Administrator Wang) o Key: • If highlighted, JPAC is playing a large role in the event • Purple text indicates the program runs itself and we need a volunteer to coordinate o "Do you feel anger" Play is sold out o Sign-up Genius development and distribution for 2025 is in progress • Administrator Wang will send out the volunteer opportunity to the Commissioners first • Then to broader volunteer community o St. Patrick's Depot Days (March 15): Will need volunteers to run art table SoUP (Society of Urban Perambulators) walking tour of Jeffersonville (March 22 or 29) • Walking thru Jeff which will include NOCO and the Art Center • We'll have someone there to talk about the Art Center o GCCS Art Show (April 11 - 20) • Opening Event (April 11): will need all hands on deck from a volunteer standpoint • Will give each artist a 5x5 canvas laser engraved with their school mascot and on which kids will be able to laser engrave their name • We expect all 500 kids along with their families to attend the opening event 2 JEFFERSONVI LLB' DATE: 2/10/2025 PUBLIC AR r°MISSION TIME: 5:30 pm , START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • There will be a coffee truck and we'll cookies/brownies available (Prosser students may make these for us) • Commissioner Young asked if there will also be a food truck and if so, to make sure the food is family friendly and accessible from a cost standpoint Earth Day Festival (March 19) • New event for JPAC • We will do an art activity • Reclaim/repurpose old paint from art center • A Maker 13 artist has offered some MDF to use for canvases • There will also be: an education booth, water, recycling information, raffle, open bar, and music Kentucky Shakespeare (May 16) at the Big 4 pavilion Cultural Pass (June and July) • We'll open the art studio on Mondays and Wednesdays, 9 a.m. - noon • Open to all ages and families can come as often as they want • Passes are available at the local library • Group passes are available • Includes free TARC pass to get to different locations • We'll have promotional information ready to distribute during the GCCS Art Show • We'll welcome participants who have a pass or not • Maker 13 will be on the pass this year Art Mobile • Last year, people signed up but don't show up • Our instructors felt they didn't make an impact • This year, we'll bring the Art Mobile to where the community already is: Riverstage and Farmers Market • Administrator Wang is working on community locations to have art mobile on site at nursing homes, schools, CASI, etc. • Commissioner Reed brought up the "Leaders 2 Readers" program at the library occurring in conjunction with poetry week/month 3 'EFFERSONVILLE DATE: 2/10/2025 I PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • Commissioner Reed to share information with Administrator Wang as an opportunity to do something in conjunction with the program o Dog Days of Summer (September 6) • We partner with the animal shelter during Pooch Plunge at the Jeffersonville Aquatic Center • There will be a charity raffle of baskets • A local artist designed t-shirt last year which the shelter sold to raise money o Steamboat Nights (October 3 - 4) There will be: • Dueling muralists • More artists than last year • Plein-air painting • Will include students o Ivy Tech Bi-centennial (October 10) o Holiday Art Festival (November 15) o TBD: • Mini Mural Festival (August) • Miscellaneous opportunities may come up • Digital Galleries (Administrator Wang) o Still struggling to get participation • Sent out a general call to all artists: social media, local schools, artist organizations • Received 3 replies: 1 viable, another TBD, 1 was spam o Suggestion was mentioned to add Jeff High to outreach list and to share with Maker 13 artists o Kat to share link with Commissioners to share out o Commissioners were asked to reach out to artists in their circles and to like and share on Facebook & Instagram o The gallery can do video but no no sound • The Commission discussed adding a QR code to the image displayed on the gallery which would link to audio - could be audio of the artist describing their work, spoken word, music, etc. • Administrator Wang is working with digital gallery company to understand full capability of the screens o Fresh Air podcast • Arts Alliance of Southern Indiana podcast, hosted and curated by the Alliance's historian, Daniel Boone 4 JEFFERSONVILLF DATE: 2/10/2025 IPUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm , ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • Fresh Art attempts to give voice to local artists, art enthusiasts, and art supporters. • Daniel is also doing a talk on February 15 at library • He would like to promote events on his podcast • We could pair up with him and the Art Alliance of Southern Indiana to share their posts/events/programming on our socials • Clark County Museum murals: opportunity for Daniel to work with us/artists/museum to learn about the art and who/what's depicted in the murals • Vote: New Chairperson (Administrator Wang) o Role: Helps meeting with flow and timing o This was tabled until everyone is able to attend the meeting so all of those who are interested have the opportunity and everyone can have a vote • Art Center Updates (Administrator Wang) o Front area: • Clean up will need to happen after February 15 • The front storage area needs big clean out • Administrator Wang may ask for help building shelves • The Art Center is fully stocked with supplies thanks to last year's grant • Studios: • Studio 4 is open and reserved for an IUS student • Studio 7 may come open • We have a waitlist of artists wanting to utilize the space • Administrator Wang will bring list to the Commission meeting so Commissioners can help select an artist • Studio 2 may be open this summer • Discussion on current contracts for artist in residence • We'll need to update the requirements, expectations, and cost to utilize the space o Back area of Art Center • Clean up started, shelves ordered • Pilot started: Open the Studio to local artists • Public Art planned for this year (Administrator Wang) o Port Fulton Neighborhood: Sidewalk stencil painting in Spring o Vote on sculptures: 5 JEFF ' SOFIILL DATE: 2/10/2025 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • We have been gifted funding from redevelopment for two sculptures to complete the Falls Landing area • We can decide to: • Look at the sculptures artists submitted for the original call before but weren't selected or • Send out a new call to artists • Commissioner Reed noted she prefers some diversity and suggested we include the designs from the initial call but also send out a new call to artists. • Upcoming events (Administrator Wang) o New Play by Uncensored Louisville (February 6, 7, 9, 13 and 15) o Stage One Storyteller (March 8): • First ten families get a full set of books (3) read during the event for free • The books will be available for sale at the event through Carmichel's Book • JPAC is sponsoring the event so there no cost to attend o Cool Mountain will be doing Hadestown - the teen edition. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS • Commissioner Reed: Great work with a lot going on • Commissioner Uhl: It's great to see new commissioners. The calendar looks good and full of fun events • Mr. Reed: This is the first time we've had so many new/fresh blood/ideas on the commission. • Commissioner Young: I'm excited to see fresh faces/minds on the Commission. It's good to see a full calendar and the energy that stems from. My favorite things about being a commissioner is knowing what's going on prior to community and to be first to offer volunteer time and support. • Commissioner Clipp-Rodriquez: This is exciting. I'm looking forward to working with everybody. • Commissioner Freeman: I'm excited about working with the animal shelter and will continue to promote our events on the Clark County Moms' Facebook page. • Administrator Wang: I'm super excited for this year and the positive vibe we have on the commission.
