HomeMy WebLinkAboutJPAC December 13, 2024 ® JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 12/13/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: NoCo Arts Center CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Callahan welcomed everyone to the meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:43 p.m. • The meeting was held in person at 700 Michigan Ave., Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. ATTENDEES • Chairperson o Rosy Callahan • Arts Administrator o Kathleen (Kat) Wang • Commissioners o Kofi Darku o Dr. Allison Miller o Donna Reed o Amy Semones o Monica Uhl o Sarah Young • Secretary o Joanna Peyron ABSENT • John Edwards • Teah Williams-Hampton GUEST ATTENDEE(S) • Andy Crouch, City Engineer OLD BUSINESS • Approve minutes from November 21, 2024 meeting o Commissioner Darku motioned to approve the minutes. o Commissioner Semones seconded. o The motion to approve the November 21, 2024 meeting minutes passed unanimously. • NoCo Holiday Market (Administrator Wang) o The event went well • There was a little more participation than last year • There weren't a lot of sales but that is a general trend and not specific to the event • Several vendors want to come back 1 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 12/13/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: NoCo Arts Center • A good time had by all o Cookie stroll: • We had 196 cookie strollers and 415 non-strollers • We sold all 350 cookie tickets • Ivy Tech Student Intern for Spring (Administrator Wang) o Maria Clapp will start her internship in January. o Administrator Wang is meeting with her next week to get her started. o Ms. Clapp will take pictures of all the art we have and design a coffee table book as a preservation of the art we've sponsored. NEW BUSINESS • Discussed opportunities (Administrator Wang) o Mini mural festival • Riley Gregor (muralist) is willing to help plan a mini mural event. • We will use this event to help activate the Art Center o New ART? Where? • Murals on Art Center • Damon Thompson provided a quote for a mural on the back/alley wall of the Art Center • An idea was discussed to make exterior wall space available for muralists with less than 2 years experience. o We would keep the mural up for a few years, then make the same space available for other muralists o We'll start thinking about call for artists • Mr. Crouch noted there will be a painting project for the silo at the new park near Ellingsworth Commons. • Chairperson Callahan suggested we look at sculptors/ sculptures we didn't choose for the Falls Landing project to see if any will work/fit in other places • Potentially could use smaller scale sculptures • We will still need to do call to artists • Art center updates (Administrator Wang) o IUS students are going to use Studio 3. • This will be funded through the Summer Works program • We will be able to use them as teachers, mentors, etc. 2 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 12/13/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: NoCo Arts Center o Digital gallery to rotate on a monthly basis • We will send out a call to artists to participate • There will be no charge to participate • The artist can sell their product without paying a commission • The Christmas card design that won the Mayor's contest will be posted next • Chairperson Callahan noted we should highlight the artists with studios in the Art Center more by promoting them on our outside/inside displays. • Side lawn ideas (Administrator Wang) o Administrator Wang asked the Commissioners to start thinking about how to activate this area o We may replace the story trail which is currently located in this space • The library has new story trail • We're not getting interest from anyone wanting to write new stories o Ideas discussed: • Add a covered area with a small, outdoor stage and an interactive lighted exhibit • Install motion sensored lights. If the area is lit, we'll have more of a presence and generate interest. • This should be a versatile space where we can host small events, an open-air market, poetry slams, acoustic music, story-telling festival, Shakespeare, Art clinics...build it they will come o Administrator Wang thanked everyone for the great ideas and asked the Commissioners to continue to brainstorm as we'll dive deeper into how we can activate the space early next year o The Depot plans to have more events and Maker 13 will be open later in the evening until 8 p.m., Monday — Friday. This will help bring traffic to this space and to the Art Center. • Upcoming events (Administrator Wang) o Storytime with Santa and Art at Maker 13 (December 15) o Greater Clark County Schools/Shakespeare (February 4 - 5) o New Play by Uncensored Louisville: Anger (February 6, 7, 9, 13 and 15) Flyers available o Stage One (March 8) 3 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 12/13/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: NoCo Arts Center o Earth Day Festival (April 19) • This will be a collaboration with the Parks Department, the City, Maker 13, and NoCo. o Greater Clark County Schools Elementary Art Show (April 10 - 19) o Tree City USA: Commissioner Semones is working on a tie-in COMMISSIONER COMMENTS • Chairperson Callahan: I'm thankful for all of the great ideas and will still be around even after my tenure ends. • Commissioner Darku: I'm grateful for time on the commission and know great work will continue. • Commissioner Miller: I appreciate being here. Arts are important to my family and I'm glad to see art extending throughout the city. • Commissioner Semones: I've learned so much this year. It's been eye opening, amazing and I'm honored to be a part of it. • Commissioner Reed: I'm happy to be here. It's been great so far and thanks to everyone for the collaboration and for bringing ideas forward. • Commissioner Uhl: I didn't know what I was getting into but it's great to be here and to be part of all that's happening. • Commissioner Young: I'm grateful to be here.
