HomeMy WebLinkAboutJFMC December 5, 2024 FIRE MERIT COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA Regular Meeting City Council Chambers December 5, 2024 CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting for December 5, 2024, Fire Merit Commission was called to order by Commissioner McCormick at 6:00 P.M. ROLL CALL: The roll call was conducted and those present were Commissioners Troy McCormick, Donovan Sims, Sam Smith, Thomas Spalding and Brooke Valentine. COMMISSION STAFF: Fire Merit Commission Counsel Zach Stewart, Fire Chief Shawn Grant, Union President Brad Tetley and Stenographer Cindy Seifert GUESTS: Dave Kaskie and Anne Langley MINUTES: Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the minutes from November 7, 2024, seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 5-0. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Sims made the motion to approve the Agenda, seconded by Commissioner Spalding, passes on a vote of 5-0. CLAIMS: Attorney Stewart presented a claim for payment to Zachary F Stewart for attorney fees in the amount of$212.50, Commissioner McCormick made the motion to approve the claim, seconded by Commissioner Smith, passes on a vote of 5-0. OLD BUSINESS: DISCUSSION OF LATERAL TRANSFER LIST Attorney Stewart advised that he has received a copy of the ordinance, 2016-OR-87 which allows the JPD to hire from an experienced officer list. Stewart advised that the Commission does not have the authority, without an ordinance, to create a lateral transfer list. He can prepare an ordinance, which will need to be presented to the Mayor and City Council for approval. He will draft and bring to future meeting for approval. Once the ordinance is approved, the Commission can create a plan for implementation and nail down the process. Page 1 of 2 NEW BUSINESS: 2025 MEETING DATES Cindy Seifert provided a list of 2025 meeting dates based on the 1st Thursday of the month, as planned/published. A few dates pose issues with Holidays or local events. The Commissioners determined to change the date of the following meetings, Cindy will contact the City Legal Department to notify of changes and the City Clerk's office to request new date for chambers. February 6, 2025 - MOVE TO FEBRUARY 13, 2025 (Conflict for Troy McCormick) May 1, 2025 - MOVE TO MAY 8, 2025 (Conflict with Derby Events) July 3, 2025 - MOVE TO JULY 10, 2025 (Conflict with Independence Day Holiday) ATTORNEY REPORT: Attorney Stewart thanked the Commission for their hard work this year with testing and interview process. REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION: Brad Tetley reminded the Commissioners of the Union Christmas Party December 13th at 6:00pm. REPORT ADMINISTRATION: No Report FIRE MERIT COMMISSION COMMENTS: Commissioner McCormick advised that he attended the ladder climb and it was COLD, he felt for the future firefighter that had to climb in those conditions. ADJOURNMENT: With no further business before the Commission, Commissioner Spalding made the motion to ADJOURN, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 5-0.
