HomeMy WebLinkAboutJPAC October 23, 2024 DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC A ' COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Callahan welcomed everyone to the meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:36 p.m. • The meeting was held in person at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. ATTENDEES • Chairperson o Rosy Callahan • Arts Administrator o Kathleen (Kat) Wang • Commissioners o Dr. Allison Miller o Donna Reed o Amy Semones o Monica Uhl o Teah Williams-Hampton o Sarah Young • Secretary o Joanna Peyron ABSENT • Kofi Darku • John Edwards • Andy Crouch, City Engineer GUEST ATTENDEE(S) • OLD BUSINESS • Approve minutes from September 9, 2024 meeting o Commissioner Williams-Hampton motioned to approve the minutes. o Commissioner Uhl seconded. o Motion passed unanimously. • Mural at Clark County Museum update (Administrator Wang) o The murals are finished. o Administrator Wang is getting the plaques and stories made 1 FFFFRSONVI ILE DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMI°. .N TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room c Parking lot beside the park had sidewalks installed as well as some pillars. • We may want to commission someone to create art on the pillars. • Will table for 2025-2026. • Artist meet/greet and mingle at Falls Landing (October 13) (Administrator Wang) • The event was fun especially since it occurred along with the Bloody Mary festival at The Depot. • Several folks walked from festival to the mingle. • Those attending were friends, family, community members • The artists were able to discuss their pieces and hand out business cards. • There is also a potential to add art to the alley between The Depot and Falls Landing. • Art Alliance of Southern Indiana Gala (October 18) (Administrator Wang) 0 Commissioner Reed attended the event. a She preferred last year's event venue. • There wasn't programming or engagements available during the dinner, singers, activities, etc., so attendees left early and potentially, spent less. • Due to the layout of the venue, people were separated into three areas versus all being in the same room. a The Alliance saved money by moving the event to The Magnolia. • Volunteers (Administrator Wang) a Need more! • Please spread the word to friends, family and organizations within your circle. c Administrator Wang or Commissioner Young will post a call for volunteers on Social Media again. Volunteer RSVP is a local organization with an active group of older adults. Commissioner Wang has shared our upcoming opportunities with them. o Commissioner Miller asked if there was an age minimum for volunteers. • Administrator Wang noted this isn't one. • The child's ability to volunteer really depends on their maturity level, time commitment and available tasks. 3 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC AR rOMMIS_. TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room NEW BUSINESS • Art Mobile (Administrator Wang) Season ending soon with just 2 more events (10/26 & 11/16) • Even if people sign-up for the event, they aren't showing up. • Two weeks ago, we had a lot of sign-ups, however, the only attendees were walk-ups. • Next season, we will bring the Art Mobile to where people are and will have more partnered events. New plans/season • We'll continue to have a presence at the Farmer's Markets. • We'll add Jammin in Jeff and set up in the kids area. ■ We'll use those opportunities to spread word about JPAC programming and other Art Mobile events. • Commissioner Semones suggested coordinating with other events so people can attend more events in one outing. • The group shared ideas where we can extend requests to partner: • Fall Festival at schools • Take Back the Night event at one neighborhood • Inclusive Fair (GCCS) for kids with exceptional needs • Hispanic Heritage Month with CAST • In January, Charlestown is hosting all GCCS second graders for a Martin Luther King Jr. event. • Partner with Maker 13, who has a new Executive Director, to bring more of the community together • Library early childhood program where we can utilize the outdoor patio or children's area. o We could also showcase children's art in the second floor gallery. o We could partner with the artist in residence for programming. • Team up with Greater Clark Foundation (Administrator Wang) Held in May, 2025 for GCCS children in grades 2 through 5 a We'd like to beef up the 2025 elementary art show which is hosted at the Art Center and provide more recognition for those artists who have their work posted at City Hall (25) Include a breakfast or lunch to honor students. 4 J EFF ERSONVI LLE DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC ARTS` ,)ION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • At the event, we can present the artists with an art basket with supplies, pins, and their award. • We'd include a little more than the notebooks we provided last year. • Commissioner Reed may be able to provide small-dollar art scholarships from IU • The scholarships would only activate if the child attends IU. • Commissioner Reed would like to invite the Chancellor to give kids the scholarships. • Reach out to Geraldine's Kitchen as a partner to cater the event. • Hire a professional photographer and advise the families in advance. Provide one family portrait per child. • When we get the art and before it's hung, we can scan it and provide a print (maybe on canvas at Maker 13) and include that in their basket. • Partner with a local art gallery for mini-showing. • We could potentially use the Library gallery or use prints of the artwork as part of a scavenger hunt to find art and promote children as artists. • Next events (Administrator Wang) o November Meeting • Two Commissioners' tenure is ending: Commissioner Darku and Chairperson Callahan • If the Commissioners know of any Jeffersonville residents who may be interested in becoming Commissions, provide Administrator Want with your suggestions. • The Commission can provide suggestions, but not acceptance is not guaranteed. o Boo Fest (October 28) • Big 4 Bridge (5 - 8 p.m.) • Administrator Wang will be there handing out candy. o Costumes & Cocktails at The Depot (October 30) o Cool Mountain Play (November 8 - 10) o Light Up Jeff in Downtown Jeffersonville (November 30) ■ We need people to walk in the parade. 5 c.4„„) JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC AR „OMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST' CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • We'll distribute handouts at the parade but will not have an art event this year. o Annual NoCo Holiday Event (December 7) ■ 12 - 5 p.m. • Closing street • There will be 24 vendors between the Art Center and Maker 13 • The Depot will open with an ornament dipping art activity. • Volunteers: • Friday, December 6: set up tables available and decorate. o Administrator Wang will ask Party Central if they'll set-up and break down the tables and at what fee. o We'll use our own chairs. • Volunteer tasks will vary by time frame: Set-up, vendor relations, tear down, etc. • The Cookie Stroll on Main Street same day as our event • Administrator Wang noted the Art Center will be part of the stroll and should bring people to the event down. • Prosser is making 300 individually wrapped cookies. o Storytime with Santa (December 15) ■ Meet and greet with kids. • At the Art Center and Maker 13 • Santa Lincoln (Crum) will read from 12:30 to 1 p.m. • The first 20 kids get Santa's book, "Oh no! Santa's going to the moon" o Greater Clark County Schools/Shakespeare (February 4 - 5) • GCCS received a kids' theater grant. • Art Center to host set design building. o New Play (February 6, 7, 9, 13 and 15) (Uncensored Louisville) o JPAC Holiday Party • The Commission's December 9 meeting will be held at the Art Center. • We'll have an abbreviated meeting. 6 ""7"?► 1 ",ILLE DATE: 10/23/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm I START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • Administrator Wang has secured catering for the event. ■ Commissioners can bring their significant other or a friend ■ Artists and art instructors are invited to attend. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS • Commissioner Uhl: Likes to hear that kids already have a desire to give service through volunteering. She sees this as a great pipeline for future commissioners and that we're cultivating that spirit. • Commissioner Semones: Recognized the positive feeling, peace and joy she gets from participating in meetings with strong women. • Commissioner Williams-Hampton: Likes that we're all with holiday and winter programming. • Chairperson Callahan: Thanks to those willing to serve, bring ideas, come without an agenda and support each other and build on ideas. • Commissioner Reed: Thanks for everything we do. o Thanks to Administrator Wang for talking with the new Youth Advisor for City Council, a Senior at Jeffersonville High School. o The Youth Advisor wants to incorporate more art in the community and to allow Jeffersonville High School students to leave their mark o Suggestions include: painting over graffiti throughout town, provide a free wall where students can express themselves, decorate crosswalks and parking lot lines, add a cultural aspect to downtown. o The Youth Advisor will take ideas to the City Council and the principal. o Administrator Want and Commissioner Reed will talk about how JPAC can collaborate. • Commissioner Miller: Echoed Commissioner Semones' thought. Feels we're making an impact on the community. • Commissioner Young: Great to work with people committed to this work. She'll miss the Commissioners who are leaving, but welcomes new Commissioners and their input and perspectives.
