HomeMy WebLinkAboutJFMC July 11, 2023 FIRE MERIT COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA Regular Meeting City Council Chambers July 11, 2024 CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting for July 11, 2024, Fire Merit Commission was called to order by Commissioner McCormick at 6:00 P.M. ROLL CALL: The roll call was conducted and those present were Commissioners Troy McCormick, Donovan Sims, Sam Smith and Brooke Valentine. Commissioner Thomas Spalding was absent. COMMISSION STAFF: Fire Merit Commission Counsel Zach Stewart and Stenographer Cindy Seifert GUESTS: James Haven,Joe Hurt and Cameron Wolfe MINUTES: Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the minutes from June 4, 2024, seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 4-0. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the Amended Agenda (amended to add additional claims), seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 4-0. CLAIMS: Attorney Stewart presented two claims for Indiana Media Group in the amount of$533.88 and $533.88 for a total of$1,067.76 for advertising in May and June, Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the claims in the amount of$1,067.76, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 4-0. Attorney Stewart presented a claim for Lavender Hill in the amount of $147.00 for flowers for Jimmy Dyson's funeral, Commissioner McCormick made the motion to approve the claim in the amount of$147.00, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 4-0. Attorney Stewart presented a claim for Zachary F Stewart in the amount of$1400.00 for attorney fees from April through July 2024, Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the claim in the amount of $147.00, seconded by Commissioner Sims, passes on a vote of 4-0. BUSINESS: PROMOTIONS TESTING REQUEST Lt.Joe Hurt presented a request to the Commission to release the scores of the promotion written testing. In the past these numbers have been released following the test so that members can have an idea how well they need to score on tactical and interview portion of process. The scores are reported with the firefighter number, rather than name, so the members will only know their own scores. Union Treasurer James Haven was present (Union President Brad Tetley was unavailable this evening) and advised that the Union does not have an issue with the release of this information. Page 1 of 2 Commissioner Sims made the motion to approve the release of the scores from promotions testing seconded by Commissioner Smith, passes on a vote of 4-0. UPDATE ON PROMOTION TESTING/INTERVIEWS Attorney Stewart advised that three tactical assessors are required for promotion testing, we need to provide lodging for them for two nights. Anne Langley has arranged the lodging which will cost approximately $650.00. Commissioner McCormick made the motion to approve an amount up to$650.00 for lodging for tactical assessors, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 4-0. Additionally, Attorney Stewart reminded the Commission that all Commissioners are needed to attend the Promotions interviews on July 22 &23. Also,Applicant Testing is August 17th, and will require 2-3 Commissioners to monitor the exam. UPDATE ON PROMOTION TESTING/INTERVIEWS Promotional applicant Cameron Wolfe addressed the Commission regarding the issues with promotions following the exhaustion of the 2022 promotions list for Lieutenant. Attorney Stewart advised that the rules for promotion state that the list for promotion are valid for a period of two years. In order to certify a new list for the exhausted Lieutenant promotions list, the Commission would have to carry on with the new date for promotions for that rank. It would force the entire cycle to be changed. Lt. Joe Hurt asked the Commission if the Council could be approached for assistance promoting to the rank of sergeant, Attorney Stewart advised that that is a salary ordinance issue and that this Commission would not be able to answer questions on that matter. ATTORNEY REPORT: No Report REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION: No Report REPORT ADMINISTRATION: No Report FIRE MERIT COMMISSION COMMENTS: Commissioner's Smith and Valentine welcomed Donovan Sims to the Commission. ADJOURNMENT: With no further business before the Commission, Commissioner Smith made the motion to ADJOURN, seconded by Commissioner Valentine, passes on a vote of 4-0. Meeting adjourned at 6:37 P.M.
