HomeMy WebLinkAboutJPAC January 1, 2024 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 PUBLIC le AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room CALL TO ORDER • Chairperson Callahan welcomed everyone to the meeting and called the meeting to order at 5:38 p.m. • The meeting was held in person at Jeffersonville City Hall, 500 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville, Indiana 47130. ATTENDEES • Arts Administrator o Kathleen (Kat) Wang • Chairperson o Rosy Callahan • Commissioners o Susan Harrison (final meeting in tenure) o Denise Freville (final meeting in tenure) o Sarah Young o Kofi Darku o John Edwards o Teah Williams-Hampton • Secretary o Joanna Peyron ABSENT • Commissioners o Dustin White (final meeting in tenure) GUEST ATTENDEES • Andy Crouch (City Engineer) • Amy Semones (Incoming Commissioner) • Monica Uhl (Incoming Commissioner) OLD BUSINESS • Reviewed and approve minutes from meeting on December 11, 2023 o Commissioner Young motioned to approve the minutes. o Commissioner Harrison seconded. o Motion passed unanimously. • Falls Landing Sculpture Call for Artists Update (Administrator Wang) o Have changed deadline to January 31 o Have now received 7 submissions. o Commissioner Young will continue with marketing. • 2024 Art Mobile Program (Administrator Wang) 1 iJEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room o Have first informal event to indoor Farmer's Market o Went live on website. o All events posted through end-of-year. o Will start promoting on Facebook tomorrow. o First formal session is at Ken Ellis Senior Center o Clarification of formal versus informal: • Formal: need to sign up, focused skills • Informal: walk up. o Formal events for teens will be posted by end-of-week EOW pending finalization of release form for kids. o Partnered events are private. • 6-8 visits throughout year • Cater to a specific audience. • January 23 at @ Bridgepoint Gardens • Will publicize and have media there. • Mayor's mom lives there. o We will always be at the Farmer's Market (2nd Saturday of the month) o The schedule is on the website • Story Trail Update (Administrator Wang) o All information has been sent to schools. o Already have 26 responses o Submission deadline March 1 o Will select Top 2 submission mid-March. o Commissioners will participate in the selection process. o Will select more on a quarterly basis. o Will reach out to past winners to see if they want their boards. o If not in good condition, could scan/photo and put into photo book with photos of ribbon cutting day. • Commissioner Freville has original image. • Include a letter of appreciation. • This will also allow us to have a digital archive for documentation and to keep on website. • We could take picture when we give the book to the student and add to documentation. • Profile photo can be cover of booklet. • Coloring Book (Administrator Wang) o Commissioner Freville will update to remove lion, add art mobile, and update the map. 2 N; JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room o The proof will be sent out to ensure all is correct. • Shirley's Arbor (Mr. Crouch) o Mr. Crouch has followed up but hasn't received a response. • Paste-up project (Commissioner Wang) o Decision made that there will be no ribbon cutting. o The project hasn't held up and/or has been vandalized. o We need to think about the gallery and how we want to use and maintain it. o Consider something more permanent or rotating. o Need to be mindful of the elements, rotation schedule, replacement timeline and materials we use. o Looking to light from the pieces from top of building to discourage vandalism and increase general visibility. o Should we name the gallery? • Team to bring names. • Commissioner Wang may set-up an ad hoc committee to present recommendations NEW BUSINESS • Rotating current sculptures (Administrator Wang) o Administrator Wang solicited feedback on rotation schedule. o Plaque would move with sculpture. o Discussed 1 or 2 years. o Group leaning to annual - low effort (expect to take 1 day to move all the sculptures) o Consensus to move annually (early Spring) o Maintenance perspective: • Moving annually with help with maintenance plan • Is also an opportunity to review for any fixes when moving. • Base will be reviewed for maintenance need as well. o We will need to advise artists about move. o This is an opportunity to tie the move to a social media/scavenger hunt promotion or contest. • Feb. 3rd National Painters Day (Administrator Wang) o Asking Damon Thompson to be honored - he has agreed. o Will be small scale. o Administrator Wang will firm up details. • Book signing • Display his artwork. 3 `g,: JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room • Light refreshments • At art center in the afternoon • Have projector to show his work and where located. • Administrator Wang will notify media with details of event. o Administrator Wang saw one of Damon's pieces at LVAA and asked about getting on loan. • LVAA would like to get rid of it. • Getting a deal on the price ($1,500) and just have to move. • 8ftx8ft o Administrator Wang would like to revitalize entrance of center into a permanent gallery promoting local artists. • We would use Damon's piece and initial piece. • Will help reactivate center. o Commissioner Darku moved to purchase piece. • Commissioner Harrison seconded the motion. • The motion was unanimously approved. • Children's Fine Arts Academy (CFAC) request (Administrator Wang) o When currently working on projects, the group has to move the student work every week. o This is an after-school program for high-school students. o The students get nominated to participate or apply. o Discussed the need for a storage area to house work in progress o Administrator Wang has requested input on the amount of space needed. • Spring Market (Administrator Wang) o Administrator Wang has put a full year together. o Had thought about June for the Market, but calendar is filling up. o The Depot is having a Derby Dress Exchange on April 6 and wanted us to collaborate. • Ideas: • Fascinators make & take. • Food & Fashion with culinary schools/restaurants - demos, recipe cards, tastings, etc. • Take a video for the YouTube channel. • Showcase instead of sell. • No food trucks. • The Bar at The Depot would include themed drink (suggest they include mocktails) No charge for attendees, TBD on charge for participants 4 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 I PUBLIC AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm START CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room o Administrator Wang to send email out to solicit volunteers to work through planning. • Art Center Name (Administrator Wang) o Need to rebrand away from NoCo Art Center and NAC o NoCo is the district. o Administrator Wang proposes name to be "The Art Center at NoCo." o Depot is branded as The Dept at NoCo o Maker 13 at NoCo okay with branding o Websites: • Jeffersonvilleart.com - Art mobile, public art, our events at The Art Center • NoCo arts district site - where on map, here are the business at NoCo - link to individual sites (collaborate with Parks & JPAC) o Will need to think about visuals to go along with rebranding. • Planning/programing 2024 (Administrator Wang) o Administrator Wang share high-level calendar of events already planned. o This is a work in progress and a living document. o Under education/workshops • We want to schedule more workshops (with artists in residences) to help activate The Art Center • Met with Stage One for collaboration for Storytellers - may enable us to get on Cultural Pass o Performances (Events) • Cool Mountain Theater (at Art Center) • Ky Shakespeare (Big 4 Bridges) • Pare back performances - take a lot of time for set-up and materials stays up throughout run so limits space for other events. • Administrator Wang to send out request to commissioners for volunteers to help clean up. • Need to consider if there is a 2nd use for any items we decide to "throw away." • Need to make sure things are actually removed. • Administrator Wang has been working on cleanup/maintenance as time allowed. o Digital Gallery - use to display public art collection when 5 JEFFERSONVILLE DATE: 01/08/2024 PUBLIC le AR COMMISSION TIME: 5:30 pm ST CREATING IDEAS LOCATION: Mayor's Conference Room transitioning between scheduled exhibits. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS • Commissioner Williams-Hampton - appreciates the view of the calendar/plan for the year. • Commissioner Edwards - great job coming in and taking control. • Commissioner Harrison - appreciates Administrator Wang's leadership. • Commissioner Freville - looking forward to seeing what happens. • Administrator Wang - thanks all, good year, team effort, takes all of us; open to separate meetings to work on different projects. • Commissioner Darku - communication is critical to what we're doing, open conversations working well and please continue. Ensure to reach out when help is needed. • Commissioner Young - emphasized that without strong backing, Administrator Wang can't do work. Ask commissioners share network/contacts with Administrator Wang to build programming. Great energy. • Chairperson Callahan - thanks to everyone for the support, sad that Commissioners Freville and Harrison are moving on. Welcome to our new commissioners...we're looking forward to new blood and new ideas. • Donna Reed & Dr. Allison Miller will join as new commissioners in February.
