HomeMy WebLinkAboutJFMC March 2, 2023 FIRE MERIT COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE, INDIANA Regular Meeting City Council Chambers March 2, 2023 CALL TO ORDER: The regular meeting for March 2, 2023, Fire Merit Commission was called to order by Commissioner SPALDING at 6:00 P.M. ROLL CALL: The roll call was conducted and those present were Commissioners James Dyson, Troy McCormick (via Zoom), Sam Smith and Thomas Spalding. Commissioner Brooke Valentine was absent. Due to attendance via Zoom, all voting will be done by roll-call. COMMISSION STAFF: Fire Merit Commission Counsel Zach, Union 558 President Brandon Hopf, Deputy Fire Chief Jason Sharp and Stenographer Cindy Seifert MINUTES: Commissioner Smith made the motion to approve the minutes from February 2, 2022, seconded by Commissioner McCormick, roll-call vote DYSON-Yes, MCCORMICK-Yes, SMITH-Yes, SPALDING-Yes, VALENTINE- Yes, passes on a vote of 5-0. APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Commissioner Spalding made the motion to approve the Agenda, seconded by Commissioner Smith, roll-call vote DYSON-Yes, MCCORMICK-Yes, SMITH-Yes, SPALDING-Yes, VALENTINE-Yes, passes on a vote of 5-0. CLAIMS: NONE BUSINESS: REPORT BACK ON WORKSHOP FOR ANNUAL FIRE ACADEMY Deputy Chief Sharp advised that the workshop was held February 7, 2023, and that in attendance was City Human Resources, Fire Administration, Two Fire Merit Commissioners and members of Fire Union 558. There were suggestions to streamline the hiring process, discussion regarding PERF and CPAT requirement. Attorney Stewart suggests that the changes need to be made to the rules, which requires public meeting. Any rule change regarding the requirement for CPAT(currently must have at time of offer)would go into effect as part of the next hiring list, not the 2022 list that expires in 2024. ATTORNEY REPORT: No Report REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION: No Report REPORT ADMINISTRATION: Deputy Chief Sharp advised that the department has retirements upcoming in the coming months. Openings for new firefighters, but also promotions to 2 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Captain, 1 Fire Marshall and 1 Lieutenant.
