HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008-R-07Resolution 2008-~R- '~ A Resolution Encouraging The State of Indiana To Provide Necessary Financial Support To Insure the Construction of the Ohio River Bridges Whereas, the citizens of the City of Jeffersonville and the State of Indiana will substantially benefit from the construction of the Ohio River Bridges; Whereas, the citizens of the City of Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky will substantially benefit from the construction of the Ohio River Bridges; Whereas, the Commonwealth of Kentucky's portion of the costs for construction of the bridges has been set at $2.9 Billion Dollars; Whereas, the State of Indiana's portion of the costs for construction of the bridges has been set at $1.1 Billion Dollars; Whereas, the United States Federal Government has established that it shall pay $4.1 Billion Dollars as its portion of the construction project; Whereas, the Speaker of the Kentucky Senate, David Williams, has stated that it is his position that a bridge toll is necessary to fund the Commonwealth's portion of the project and/or Sen. Williams has advocated leasing the bridge to a private entity to operate; Whereas, bridge tolls are disfavored by the general citizenry of both Indiana and Kentucky; Whereas, the Jeffersonville City Council understands that the bridge funding formula has been developed for the purpose of insuring that each state pays its just and fair portion based upon the location of the state's boundaries, projected uses and other economic, geography and political determinations; Whereas, it is the desire of the Jeffersonville City Council to encourage the State of Indiana and its elected officials, both local, state and federal, to undertake any and all steps to expedite the construction of the bridge; THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT: 1. The Jeffersonville City Council requests our United States Congressmen, and United State's Senators to pursue any and all efforts of expediting the funding of Page 1 of 3 .the bridge; 2. The Jeffersonville City Council requests the Governor of Indiana and its State Senate delegation and State Representative delegation to investigate and determine if the State of Indiana has any additional transportation funds available to pay upon the project in an effort to reduce the Commonwealth of Kentucky's financial burden in order to eradicate the need for tolls; 3. The Jeffersonville City Council requests that all branches of Indiana government, local, federal and state redouble their efforts at moving the Ohio River Bridges Project forward to fruition; BE IT SO RESOLVED ON THIS ~ DAY OF FEBRUARY, 2008.
