Resolution to Delaying Annexation
Vote Until January 1, 2008
Whereas, the collective membership of the Jeffersonville City Council share the
common goal to take those actions necessary to ensure that the taxpayers and citizens
of Jeffersonville are best served by government.
Whereas, the council understands the importance of planning for change and
supports the city's effort to foster reasonable growth of the city. The Jeffersonville City
Council believes that the mayor and all other elected officials share in that same goal.
Whereas, on May 8th, 2007 the citizens of the city of Jeffersonville cast their
votes for mayor, city judge, clerk-treasurer and city council.
Whereas, the present mayor was defeated in his bid for re-election. Therefore,
the city of Jeffersonville will have a new mayor beginning January of 2008.
Whereas, one (1) member of the council chose not to seek re-election; One (1)
member was defeated in the Primary election; Two (2) members are presently
contested in their re-election bids in November of 2007. The Republican and Democrat
party have until early July of 2007 to rominate candidates to oppose the remaining un-
opposed council members and clerk-treasurer.
Whereas, at a minimum there will be two (2) new members of the city council
and a new mayor in 2008.
Whereas, the issue of annexation of 9,000 residents and thousands of parcels
of real estate is of significant historic importance.
Whereas, the city council, mayor and clerk-treasurer elected and serving on
January 15t, 2008 will be obligated to provide services to the newly annexed areas.
Whereas, it would seem unreasonable for the .present mayor and city-council to
commit a new council and mayor to undertake annexation without first allowing them
the opportunity to determine if they believe that the city can provide those services
during their tenure.
