WHEREAS, April is declared Alcohol Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drag Dependence. WHEREAS, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drag Dependence encourages communities to take a closer look at how alcohol affects young people. WHEREAS, alcohol abuse is the leading cause of death among youth. This is because drinking is often linked to fatal car crashes, homicides and suicides. WHEREAS, youngsters typically try their first alcoholic drink around the age of 13. WHEREAS, junior high and high school students drink more than a third of all wine coolers sold in the United States. WHEREAS, the legal age to purchase alcohol in all 50 states is 21. Yet teens have easy access to alcoholic beverages in our community. Two thirds of all youth who drink say they can buy their own beer. WHEREAS, more than half the students in grades 5 through 12 say that alcohol advertising encourages them to drink. THEREFORE, the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville does hereby proclaim that April 1995 is Alcohol Awareness Month in Jeffersonville, Indiana. As the Common Council of the City of Jeffersonville, Indiana, we also call upon all citizens, parents, governmental agencies, public and private institutions, businesses, hospitals and schools in Clark County to help raise awareness about this critical public health issue and join us in "drawing the line" to prevent underage drinking.
