Regular Proceedings
November 7, 2019
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting for November 7, 2019 Fire Merit Commission was called to order by
Commissioner Brown at 6:00 P.M.
ROLL CALL:The roll call conducted and those present were Commissioner Brown, Commissioner Dyson,
and Commissioner Smith. Commissioner McCormick.
GUEST:Joe Hurt, President Union 558, Bryon Emerson, Bruce Deark, Assistant Chief.
MINUTES: Minutes for Regular Proceedings October 3, 2019 Commissioner McCormick made the
motion to APPROVE the minutes, seconded by Commissioner Dyson, passing on a vote of 4-0.
Minutes from the Special Meeting October 11, 2019, Motion to APPROVE by Commissioner Brown,
seconded by Commissioner McCormick passing on a vote of 4-0.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: Motion to ACCEPT Agenda as present by President Spalding, seconded by
Commissioner Smith, passing on a vote 4-0.
CLAIMS: Invoice presented for Attorney Fees for$712.50, Motion to APPROVE by Commissioner Smith,
seconded by Commissioner Dyson passed on a vote of 4-0

ATTORNEY REPORT:
None at this time
REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION:
Joe Hurt, Union President stated the General Elections went well and there will be several new members
on the Jeffersonville City Council. Firefighter Brian Emmerson spoke to the Commission regarding his
experience at a coffee shop in Louisville where he was asked if he wanted a shot of CBD Oil in his coffee.
Both Emmerson and Hurt reported that they will continue to bring up insistences as this and even
though they preach to the union members to air on side of caution would dread for someone to lose
their job as a firefighter for not knowing what they had ate or drank had CBD Oil.
REPORT ADMINISTRATION JFD CHIEF:
Assistant Chief DeArk reported to the Commission the three (3) new hires a waiting on INPRES to sign off
and the Goal is to Start November 18, 2019. For 2019,there have been ten (10) hires, nine (9) new and
one (1) replacement. Testing will be next year the Human Relations Committee and crew will be going
to Jeff High to speak with students interested in becoming firefighters and the Fire Science Degree they
can receive through Ivy Tech.
FIRE MERIT COMMISSION COMMENTS:
Commissioner McCormick inquired about the events the Political Open House and the Chili Cook-off.
Union President Hurt spoke that both events were very well attended.
ADJOURNMENT:
With no further business before the Commission, Commissioner Dyson mad the motion to ADJOURN,
seconded by Commissioner Futz Brown. Meeting adjourned at 6:20 P.M.
