Regular Proceedings
June 6, 2019
CALL TO ORDER: The meeting for June 6, 2019 Fire Merit Commission was called to order by
Commissioner Spalding at 6:00 P.M.
ROLL CALL:The roll call conducted and those present were President Spalding, Commissioner Smith,
Commissioner Futz- Brown, Commissioner Dyson, and Commissioner McCormick.
GUEST: Joe Hurt, President Jeffersonville Firefighters I.A.F.F. Local 558; JFD Chief Hedrick
MINUTES: Minutes for Regular Proceedings May 2, 2019 Commissioner McCormick made the motion to
APPROVE the minutes, seconded by Commissioner Smith, passing on a vote of 5-0
APPROVAL OF AGENDA: A motion to ACCEPT Agenda as present by Commissioner Smith, seconded by
Commissioner McCormick, passing on a vote 5-0.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS:
None-at this time
NEW BUSINESS:
1.Zach Stewart—Hiring of six(6) new firefighters and one (1)to replace retired firefighter bringing
total to 7. Attorney Stewart reported the City Council on May 20, 2019 approved to start the hiring
process 7 firefighters, has the list and will start the calling process. Chief Hedrick again reiterated how
the process is too preceded including the ladder climb to be held next Thursday or Friday.
Commissioner Futz- Brown asked Mr. Stewart to email the names to the Commission Members.
2. Zach Stewart—Discussion on Changes in Application Criteria—Attorney Stewart opened discussion
that members of the Commission as inquired about the possibility of adding physical exam into the
testing for the JFD. Presently the personal interview counts 60%and written testing is 40%. President
Spalding stated an applicant may be good at testing and the interview section but may not be physically
in shape for the position and some applicants may not test good but interview and physically very
capable of the position. President Spalding has spoken with the Clarksville Fire Chief and his department
does incorporate some form of physical component. Attorney Stewart stated will look into other 2"
Class Cities to see if they have a physical component in their testing combined with the CAPT. Union
President Hurt stated that Columbus has a mile or a mile and one half run.
ATTORNEY REPORT:
None at this time
REPORT FROM LOCAL 558 UNION:
1.Joe Hurt—Human Relations Committee met this afternoon and working on propose changes before
next hiring cycle.
REPORT ADMINISTRATION JFD CHIEF:
1. Chief Hedrick reported Crusade went well and spoke about the explosion that had taken place over
the weekend with the loss of a life of one of the residents and the injuries suffered by the other
resident.
FIRE MERIT COMMISSION COMMENTS:
None at this time
ADJOURNMENT:
With no further business before the Commission, Commissioner McCormick mad the motion to
ADJOURN, seconded by Commissioner Dyson. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 P.M.
