Attendees: Dawn Spyker Ed Zastawny John McCarthy Susan Harrison Deborah Henderson Denise Freville Paul Northam Rosy Callahan Leslie Lewis Absent: Kofi Darku Guests: Andy Crouch Richard Eklund Old Business WELCOME New Commissioner—Rosy Callahan Ed introduced Rosy Callahan as the newly appointed commissioner, and Rosy gave a brief description of her background. Approval of minutes from February 11, 2019— Susan mentioned that her name and Deborah's name had been merged and that it be corrected Motion by John McCarthy, 2nd by Paul Northam-all voted to approve Collection of Posters/Handbills—discuss each activitroccurring in April Dawn provided handbills and posters to Commissioners for upcoming events,to be given out and dispersed to the public. She described the events as shown below: April 5/6 to 9 p.m.l Creative Impact Series at NoCo Arts Center-demonstrating wood turner-Greg Kimberlin April 9-11/11th-4:30 to 6 p.m.l Elementary Art Show at NoCo Arts Center 628 Michigan Ave. April 20 l 10 a.m.to 2 p.m./Mosaic JAM Session with community at NoCo Arts Center April 26/5 p.m.to 8:30 p.m.l Shakespeare at Picasso Pointe Dawn asked that the Commissioners attend each of these events, if possible. Also, John provided additional information regarding the Elementary Art Show. Jack Becker—First Long Range Planning Meeting (two day visit I April 8th and 9th) Dawn provided information to the Commission regarding Jack's first visit. Jack will be at the JPAC meeting and will present to the Commission. He will also be meeting with multiple city officials, public librarians, Department Heads, and other City groups to talk with them regarding the NoCo District and programming. Arts Center Progress (Clean out, design documents, bidding process) Dawn gave an update on the recent renovation initiative of the Art Center. Large items have been cleared and placed into storage, and design documents are nearly ready to go out for permitting and bids. Riverfront Artists visited Jeffersonville Dawn gave the Commission a summary of the Riverfront Sculpture Artists' (Luke Crawley and Quincy Owens) visit to the most recent Jeffersonville Arts Alliance meeting. They presented on some of their most recent works, and also brought samples of the material that the paddlewheel will be constructed from. New Business VOTE—Black Box Mural Design (outbuilding—next to water tank—to be painted this summer) Dawn presented suggested renderings from the Arts Alliance members. She described the building that the mural would be placed onto, and gave some ideas as to the context of the area. She then asked the Commissioners to vote on the presented renderings. The black and white fossil mural was selected. Utility Box Project- (pick 10 to 12 locations) call to go live MARCH 25th calls due MAY 8th—"Paint Out"weekend of June 21-23 OR rain date weekend of June 28—30th Dawn presented a spreadsheet of available Traffic Control boxes that are both painted and available to paint. She asked the Commission to each select a box from the available list. Two Grants Submitted Dawn described two different grants that were applied for in the last few weeks: The first being one for a NoCo Video and the second being financial support for the Creative Impact Series Sculpture Artist in Residence— both grants were for max amount of$5000 each. Sculpture Artist in Residence to visit Jeffersonville—site visit Friday, March 22, time to be determined Dawn updated the Commission on Brian Somerville coming in on Friday, March 22. She will update the Commission as details come about. She also explained that this piece would be placed at Picasso Pointe. 47130 Neighborhood Art Show Dawn described an idea regarding a Neighborhood Art Show that was suggested to her by Virginia Peck. Virginia suggested that members of the JNLA neighborhood associations submit pieces for the new gallery at the NoCo Art Center once it is renovated. Ed asked if there would be enough interest and submissions. Deb asked about who would select the entries from each neighborhood. Dawn described a few different ideas regarding submissions and selections, and hoped that each neighborhood would submit multiple pieces. Susan suggested that anyone, whether they are in a JNLA neighborhood or not, could submit a piece. The Commission liked the idea, and was interested in pursuing the idea further. John asked about timing, and Dawn suggested sometime in November, after the Art Center is renovated. Dawn will start working on details for the show. John made a motion that JPAC support the show,Paul seconded, and all voted to approve. Commissioner Comments: Paul brought up Steamboat Nights and asked about whether we would be hosting a lantern making workshop. Dawn assured him that JAA would be doing that. Paul asked about the budget for the Art Center renovation. Dawn explained that we were expecting the cost to be between $150,000 and $200,000. Ed asked about the Abbey Road project shown on the project list for the year, and asked if we were on track to get it completed. Dawn stated that she'd been talking with Gary Jacobs with AROTR and they've decided not to introduce a new piece to the festival this year. Ed also asked about the Art map initiative as well. Dawn assured him that she had been working toward images and description for all of our pieces. Ed mentioned that Meredith Rodriquez has requested to borrow some of the custom stencils that they City purchased for painting the parking lot at Picasso Pointe. Dawn explained some of the concerns that she has with loaning the stencils out, and asked that the Commission decide on whether we would allow this to happen or not. Ed stated that he liked the idea of cooperating with the schools, but stated that he was worried about losing some of the uniqueness of Picasso Pointe if the games and stencils are used in other places in the City. John asked about the material, and Dawn told him that it was made of a thin acrylic. Paul suggested that we give Meredith some direction as to where we acquired ours from, and who made them. The Commission liked Paul's idea, and decided to move in that direction. Public Comments: Motion to adjourn by Paul Northam, Seconded by Leslie Lewis. Meeting ended at 6:58pm.
