Attendees: Dawn Spyker John McCarthy Susan Harrison Amber Ridings (Sitting in for Paul Northam) Leslie Lewis Kofi Darku Deborah Henderson Nathan Samuel Denise Freville Absent: Paul Northam (Amber Ridings sitting in for him) Guests: Andy Crouch Old Business Approval of minutes from August 13, 2018— Motion by Kofi Darku, 2"d by Leslie Lewis—all voted to approve 'Jeff' Sculpture-Update Dawn has contacted the contractor. He has received an initial payment and should be starting in the next two to three weeks. Nathan asked about how long it would take, and Dawn said that the contractor sounded like it would be a quick process. Aerial Mural Progress—Decide on Dedication Date Nathan stated that we typically do a ribbon cutting, but that we are in the middle of the Triangle Lot celebration on Sept. 29th at the moment also. He wasn't sure of everyone's schedule. He asked about announcing the Mural at the Sept 29th meeting, but also suggested having its own dedication. He asked for input from the Commissioners. John asked about having an event for the artist to speak at. Kofi suggested that the dedication be on the same day as the September 29th celebration. Dawn will put the mural art on a banner to be erected at the Picasso Pointe celebration. Steamboat Nights (Report Out) Dawn stated that Friday night was almost a washout but cleared up around 8:30pm. Friday night was a packed house for the lantern making sessions. On Saturday we had perfect weather and a great turnout from the public. Dawn thanked all of the volunteers for coming to help setup, greet, and take down the festival. Dawn also suggested that a cross that was made by the blacksmiths at the event be given to Southeast Christian as a thank you gift for sending people to serve. Accreditation Document(Report out) Dawn gave an update on the completion of the document and thanked everyone that was involved with finalizing it. Dawn made a comment that she felt the one 'weak link' in our application was that we lacked a Public Art Long Range plan. She's reached out to the IAC for some names of people that can help us create that document. New Business Picasso Pointe Celebration—Scheduled for Sat., Sept. 29th from 11-1 Dawn referenced the celebration poster and gave a summary of the day's agenda and activities. There will be food, games, music, and fun. She has been working on photobooks together for the kids that created the Picasso Face pieces, and will probably put together a canvas for Mike Kelley. All bike racks arrived today, and we will get those installed in the near future. Dawn asked Amber to provide the sound system and podium for the event,through the Parks Department. John asked about where the tent and podium would be located. Dawn stated that she was working with the tent provider on locations. Nathan suggested closing 7th Street and putting the tent in the street. After discussion,Nathan suggested that we close 7th Street and we work out the logistics of the tent location internally with staff. Nicho-making activities will be taking place at the same time as the celebration. Sugar Skull—Schedule of Events and Report Out on Fernando in Schools Dawn passed out postcard-sized handouts with a schedule of events and map. Banners will be installed in the Park and above Court Avenue. Fernando has been in the school classrooms for the last four Wednesdays. All of the kids now have a functioning pan pipe, and practice starts in the classroom this upcoming Wednesday. State Public Art Workshop—Oct. 18th and 19th Dawn mentioned the Homecoming Public Workshop and asked if any commissioners would want to go. No commissioners were able to attend. Susan Harrison said that she would talk to her principal about it. Commissioner's comments/questions Deborah asked about the status of the Riverfront statue project. Dawn stated that the Mayor chose a piece today. Upcoming NoCo Celebration—Night before and day of setup—Volunteers needed Dawn asked for volunteers to help set up for the NoCo Celebration. Umbrellas need to be installed, the labyrinth needs finished, bike racks need installed, parking stops need placed and painted. Nicho Making Sessions: Sept. 29`h and October 13th loam—2pm—Volunteers Needed Dawn will send out information to the Commissioners on any help that she will need. Motion to adjourn by Deborah.
