Patricia Barrow—Vice President
Jeff Frey—Secretary
Bernie Horvath—Board Member
Thomas Spalding—Board Member
Nathan Masingo —Attorney
Connie Conen—Recording Secretary
GUESTS: 13 Firemen and 3 Civilians
CALL TO ORDER:
Mr. Monohan called the meeting to order at 6:05PM. Mr. Horvath and Mr. Masingo
were absent.
BUSINESS:
- Mr. Frey made a motion to approve the minutes of the July 5, 2018 meeting; Ms.
Barrow seconded. The motion was passed unanimously.
- Mr. Frey made a motion to certify the 2018 New applicant list, Ms. Barrow
seconded. The motion was passed unanimously.
- Mr. Todd Hoehn was introduced—he is Number 1 on the New Applicant List.
- Mr. Monohan reminded all that August 27, 2018 is the deadline for turning in
Promotional Packets. The actual date for promotional testing will be forthcoming
from IPSP.
- Mr. Hurt noted that the Human Relations Group in the Fire House meets once a
month. Some new applicants reached out to the group with questions regarding
the process:
o Why was the interview section split into 2 panels? Because of the number
of applicants—with only 1 panel it would have been a 2 day process.
However all scoring in blended into 1 score. IPSP averages the scores—if
there is a large disparity between scores for each question, IPSP would
question it. Unfortunately all discussion is limited to just asking the
questions—no additional discussion can be had so that everything is equal.
o Any applicant with a military background and submitted the required
proof received 1 point on their written test score.
o Can an applicant find out what he scored on each question—Mr. Monohan
will discuss with IPSP. The Commissioners receive training from IPSP on
how to score.
o The Chief asked if any mechanical aptitude test could be included in the
new applicant testing—Mr. Hurt will look into what other Fire
Departments are doing.
o Does how an applicant dress count—yes.
- Mr. C. Kinnaird thanked the Merit Commission for all of their work.
- The Chief noted that Mr. B Deark is at home recovering from surgery. He was in
the hospital for 14 days. The Chief received a letter from River Ridge saying that
they did not have any funding to assist with an expanded house in that area. A
new hire will start at Station 1 or 2 for training. He expects to have 3 retirees in
2019.
