HomeMy WebLinkAboutPAC AUGUST 13, 2018 410 JEFFERSONVILLE PUBLIC AR COMMISSION Jeffersonville Public Art Commission Mayor's Conference Room August 13th, 2018 Nathan Samuel called the meeting to order at 5:33 pm. Attendees: Dawn Spyker John McCarthy Susan Harrison Amber Ridings (Sitting in for Paul Northam) Denise Freville Leslie Lewis Kofi Darku Deborah Henderson Nathan Samuel Absent: Paul Northam (Amber Ridings sitting in for him) Guests: Andy Crouch Richard Eklund Heather Rapp Old Business Approval of minutes from July 9, 2018 — Motion by Denise Freville, 2nd by Leslie Lewis—all voted to approve 'Jeff' Sculpture - Update from Paul (refer to attachments) Dawn provided documentation regarding the placement of the lights and asked for feedback. Nathan asked about the placement of the solar panels. Andy and Amber mentioned that she and Paul had met with Tim McCoy (Green Team Supervisor) and decided on a location that would not be visibly obtrusive, and would be out of the way of mowing. There was also a discussion of where to locate the placard, with a consensus agreeing that it would be off the back of the sidewalk along 10th Street, in the middle of the exhibit. Call to Artists (Sculpture Trail— need to secure additional locations) Dawn updated everyone and stated that we would be postponing this project until 2019. This will give us three different locations for installations, including the intersection of 6th and Kentucky, Plank Road, and Utica Pike. Dawn stated that we would keep the theme of"Fluidity", but issue the RFP in 2019. Aerial Mural Progress—End of August install Dawn stated that she has been in contact with Stefan regarding the status. Stefan has been out of town, but intends to have it installed by the end of the month. A celebration will be planned once it is installed. Steamboat Nights (Volunteer Assignments) Members were asked to volunteer at various events for Steamboat Nights New Business Check out this month's LEO!!! Dawn presented a copy of the LEO with an article about the Arts District Name tags /Name Plates for commissioners Plates and tags provided to members - Thanks to Denise! CELEBRATION DATE —PLEASE mark your calendars! Sat. Sept. 29th from 11-1 pm at the lot— celebrating the water tank and triangle lot (community cookout style)! Dawn explained the reasoning for the date for the celebration, after consulting with SoIn. A band will be playing, firefighters grilling food, etc. More information to come at next month's meeting. Sugar Skull Poster— please help share Dawn passed out copies of the Sugar Skull poster for members to place in businesses around the City. Dawn stated that banners were also coming. Dawn gave an update on Fernando working with the schools, and Aug 29th and Sept 5th would be the dates that he would actually be making the flutes with the students. Any volunteers are welcome to assist. John Interested in attending the State Public Art Workshop (Indiana Homecoming)- October 18th & 19th? (refer to attachment) Dawn updated the Commission on a workshop in Fort Wayne. It's $75 to attend, geared toward various aspects of Public Art, and offered to have the JPAC pay for Commissioners to attend if they would like to. Members said that they would get back with her. Commissioner's comments/questions Leslie mentioned that Jason Applegate with Extol Magazine contacted her regarding the interior and exterior of the Vintage Fire Museum. He wants to add quite a bit to the museum. They will be reaching out to Alan Muncy with ARC for construction. She also asked to be included in the Points of Interest on the Arts and Cultural District Map, as well as True Bliss Boutique. Nathan thanked Dawn for her tireless work at the Fire Museum lot in the last month. Kofi attended the Court Avenue public visioning session and would like the JPAC to look into contributing to any future project in that corridor. Dawn mentioned that she had been discussing similar involvement with the Public Library staff. Upcoming Last 2 Lantern Making Workshops — (Saturday, August 11th & August 18th 10 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. GW Building) Dawn updated the Commission on the lantern making sessions. Heather Rapp also presented some information on the upcoming dates, times, and opportunities. Fernando creating pan pipes in Parkwood & Spring Hill (Sept. 5th & 12th) Can you volunteer? Mentioned previously in the meeting Nicho Making sessions: September 29th and October 13th Dawn discussed the shadow box making sessions that would be coming up, and invited the Commissioners to attend.
