HomeMy WebLinkAboutPAC APRIL 9, 2018 11111 JEFFERSONVILLE PUBLIC ARTCo COMMISSION Jeffersonville Public Art Commission Mayor's Conference Room April 9th, 2018 Nathan Samuel called the meeting to order at 5:31 pm. Attendees: Dawn Spyker Nathan Samuel John McCarthy Deborah Henderson Melissa Goforth Susan Harrison Paul Northam Denise Freville Leslie Lewis Kofi Darku Absent: None Guests: Andy Crouch Richard Eklund Michael Wimmer Old Business Approval of minutes from 11.13.2017 Motion by Deb Henderson, 2nd by Kofi Darku —all voted to approve, Paul N. and Melissa G. abstained due to not being present at the previous meeting Maintenance Update Dawn explained that one of the Monumental Memories was vandalized. Dawn has contacted Jay Ellis since Jeff Main Street was originally involved with the project. It is currently removed and will be replaced. The Swing Sculpture is missing two baseballs in the back. She has a box of new baseballs to replace them and will be installing them in the next few weeks. The Thomas Jefferson utility box near Warder Park has been vandalized. She will be looking into fixing it, if possible. The benches for Maxwell's House of Music (Harmony Landing) have been refinished and will be replaced by the Parks Department soon. Art Scholarship Dawn provided a draft scholarship document for everyone to review and comment on. Susan asked about whether other things besides visual arts would be included. Dawn stated that she would remove the phrases that do not refer visual arts, particularly in the portfolio submission area. John M. commented on a portion of the document regarding visual ART(S). Dawn stated that she would modify the document accordingly. Nathan stated that the$1500 note at the top of the document may need to be dropped to $1000 based on previous discussions among the JPAC. Discussion ensued. John recommended that it stay at$1500, and that the Arts Alliance may contribute as well. John recommended that the draft be modified to include any Jeffersonville resident that is a graduating high school senior,but not necessarily in attendance at Jeffersonville High School. Melissa suggested that it stay with Jeff High students. Nathan suggested that two to three people look the document over further and provide input. John and Susan volunteered. Dawn needs input quickly,as she wants to get it to the High School(s) soon,hopefully by Friday. Susan suggested that it stay with Jeff High Students, and that it stay at $1500. Susan placed that into a motion, John seconded. All were in favor. A discussion of the voting for the scholarship award. Kofi, Susan, Melissa, John, and Leslie volunteered to serve on that committee, with the understanding that other commission members could attend and vote if they'd like to. A date for the judging will be set at a later date. Fieldtrip Reports (Picasso & Gifted/Talented) Dawn presented a slide show of pictures from the Picasso painting field trip at WM Kelley's facility. Dawn presented a slide show of pictures from the Gifted and Talented field trip that was held at the Grey and Wells Arts Facility. Crosswalk Update Dawn stated that the stencils have arrived. Street Department will be painting all of the crosswalks black this week. The paint is ready to be picked up. The art will start going in within the next week. Call To Artist Updates (Riverfront/Bike Racks/Aerial Mural) Aerial Mural applications are due the 20`h. Some applications have already been received. Riverfront Sculpture Call To Artists will be going out later this month with modified language in the requirements. Bike Rack—Nathan discussed placing one at the County building. He has reached out to the County Commissioners and offered to place a rack on their property. He stated that we would be moving the "Birds" rack from in front of Adrienne's,perhaps to the County building location. The Commissioners are in favor of putting the "Birds" there, and he will get that in writing soon. Nathan also talked to them about painting a mural on the front step risers, but has not received any feedback on that yet. A "bakery" themed rack would be commissioned for in front of Adrienne's. Ladybug Landing was the third location offered for a bike rack. Additional Old Business Paul asked to add a topic to the Old Business section -he provided information regarding lighting for the Jeff Running Men installation. He is still working on finalizing some quotes and particulars. Questions were asked by Susan and John regarding how reliable the solar light option would be. He will continue to look into options and costs. New Business Aramark Connection to Sugar Skull Festival & Grant Submission Dawn submitted a grant application but has not received results back yet. However, she is also working with Aramark and North Haven and Parkwood Elementary Schools. The schools with provide authentic Latino recipes,will see recipe books at the Sugar Skull Festival, and Aramark will be preparing and selling the recipes at the festival. Leslie noted that Ramiro would be reaching out to Dawn as well. Title Cards for Placards (Review for edits/Explain material/Review Cost) Dawn presented an example of a placard for the Rotary Drinking Fountain piece. She has given this to Bill Reedy to get approval from the Rotary Club. She also showed the location that we plan to install the fountain. Dawn also presented a placard for the Picasso installations. Paul asked about placards for the sidewalk sculptures. Dawn said that now that she has a template to use from the two above, she could get something put together very soon. Shakespeare Performance Posters (take one and help spread the word) Dawn passed out posters for the performance and asked commissioners to spread them around the community. Planned Updates to the Current Website (Bios/Headshots/calendar of events) Dawn stated that she would be updating the website in the near future with fresh information. Commissioner Comments Melissa stated that the Clark County Youth Shelter off of Spring Street would like to be involved in the Public Art process. John asked about activities that happen at the shelter, and suggested that the Jeffersonville Arts Alliance get involved with them. Paul asked about the Grey Whale event this upcoming Wednesday. Dawn stated that the Arts Alliance would be working on the Abbey Road art projects, both the sculptural piece and the photo opportunity piece. There will be a work session from 6-8pm. Dawn stated that she received more postcards for the JPAC. They would be available later this week. Dawn presented visuals oft-shirts and posters for the Sugar Skull Festival.
