Update on the Jeffersonville Arts Alliance Fundraiser(John McCarthy)
The JAA fundraiser had 60 regional artists who submitted art and 20 local businesses submitted items for raffle and auction. JAA had
set and exceeded the financial goal, they made over$10,000.00. Heuser Hardware has stepped forward to fund the fust JAM session of
the year. The fundraiser was fun and the food was delicious. There were a lot of Louisvillians who came over the river to the event.
The event was publicized by Leo(Pick of the Week),Insider Louisville,Elizabeth Kremer's blog and the News and Tribune.
Sculptural Walking Trail Art Submm fission Adjudication
There are 9 artists and 27 total pieces. The artists are of varying levels of expertise-some artists are young(freshman/sophmore in
college). The scoring is done with a rubric. The scoring criteria are taken directly fromthe RPF. OakParkis the first community in Jeff
who will get the art pieces. As more neighborhoods get pieces they can be interchanged from neighborhood to neighborhood with
standard pedestals located all over town. The theme for the subnrissions is Flora Transforma so that means something that morfs and
comes fromnature. Judging is not easy so please take time to look at each piece thoughtfully. Does the piece fit the theme,is it
colorful? All of the pieces are made of metal which is a durable material. All of the artist's references have checked out (Dawn Spyker
called beforehand). You should read the artist's statements as well as look at the work when judging. Consider how will this artwork fit
into your neighborhood and how will it fit on the pedestals? The artists names are not on the works,it is a blind adjudication. A
question was asked about the locations. The locations are as follows: 2 are on middle, right past the old dairy queen(now a pet
grooming place),the second one is across fromthe entrance to Cypress past the church. The second two are on Allison Lane, the first
is by Faith Lutheran Church, the second is at the split at Oak Park Boulevard.
Several scenario can e3ast into the outcome of our scoring. If one person sweeps all three pieces do we ask the artist for a forth so they
are cohesive? Or do we choose two from the top two scoring artists. Are we ok with the above stated choosing procedures or are we
strictly taking top counts? If they are moving around does it matter if they are cohesive? Andy Crouch has some sidewalk projects in
Lisa Gill's district and they have identified 3 places there that can have new pedestals. AC may be able to fund the next round fromthe
sidewalk budget. Possibly for future we can ask for artists to submit 3 pieces of art but let them know that only one will be chosen.
After the scores were tallied the top 4 pieces were selected: #9A by Maureen Gray,#8B by Michael Wimmer,#7A by Joseph Autry and
#7B by Joseph Autry.
Utility Box Discussion
Paul Northamhas created a list of 36 utility boxes at different locations which could be painted. Andy Crouch and Jeff Johnson
identified if the boxes from Paul's list were ours(we can only paint boxes belonging to the city)and which of those boxes are slated to
be replaced(we wouldn't want to paint boxes that will be removed). Debbie Welsh's box(at Meigs and Court)was hit by a car and is
out of commission. A couple of boxes were removed(for mechanical reasons)but they have been inventoried for later use. We need to
think about how many boxes we should do. To prepare the boxes they have to be cleaned and prepped with a special primer. On the
weekend of the event the paint, brushes and artists design are boxed and ready for the painting to begin. The weekend of June 2-4 will
be the weekend for the artists to do the painting. The event will be publicised so that community members can go out and watch the art
being created. The city council members would like to have input on what boxes are done in which neighborhoods. JM suggests that
we map the current boxes and the newly proposed boxes so that we can make sure the boxes are not all clustered in one area. Nathan
Pruitt has showed DS a new feature of Google Maps which plots things. In the newer(growing)areas of town(up 10th street)the
construction will prohibit(timewise)artwork going on those boxes. The stipend is$300 and the event is more fun than competitive.
There is still a lot of interest in artists doing the boxes. Last time we asked for submissions we had 12 or 13 boxes and had 14 or 16
submissions.

Nachand Fieldhouse Mural Dedication-Nachand Mural Dedication—Thursday,April 5a'at 5:30PM
Jeremy Jarvis is the artist who painted the rmrral at Nachand Fieldhouse. He is able to come to the dedication. It is best if all
commissioners come to the dedication. It should take only 20 minutes or so. The dedication will be on April 5th at 5:30PM. JM
suggests that we call for all people who played Bball at the fieldhouse to come to the dedication.
V.Looking Ahead(DS says this was NS great idea!)
Sculptural Drinking Fountain call is due Friday March 20(to be adjudicated with Rotary Club Reps in April)
DH talked with an artist who was hesitant to apply because he said it would cost himmoney just to submit the application. DS says in
the RFP it clearly states that artists are not responsible for the plumbing or the pieces, they are just responsible for the art around the
fountain and it only asks for a drawing/rendering. DS believes that artists are not thoroughly reading the RFP and are opting out of
submission because of not reading and understanding the RFP fully.
Utility Boxcall goes live April 5 (spread the word by social media and word of mouth)
Shakespeare in Big Four Park—Julius Caesar(May 19'at 7PM)
Julius Caesar is a PM performance. The Jeff High Jazz band will be there to perform as well. We are thinking about reaching out to a
food truck to be there as well.
Questions/Comments:
DS says that we need strong programming for the new Arts and Cultural district. After res earch DS has hit on 6 or 7 topics that keep
A&C districts going and successful in other cities and she has identified that we have those skill sets within our group. More will be
discussed on those successful strategies later. We will have cormmnity forums to help get direction fromthe comrnrnity on what they
would like to see happen.
