HomeMy WebLinkAboutMay 2, 2013 1 CITY OF JEFFERSONVILLE FIRE MERIT COMMISSION Thursday, May 2, 2013 The Jeffersonville Fire Merit Commission held a Regular Meeting on Thursday, May 2, 2013 in the 1 Floor Council Room, 500 Quartermaster Court, Jeffersonville, IN. Lyn Akermon — President Bobby Ervin- Vice President Jeff Frey — Secretary Patricia Barrow — Board Member Clark Miles — Board Member Drew Adams — Attorney Connie Conen — Recording Secretary GUESTS Chief Hedrick, T. Sharp, C. Ogden, J. Thompson CALL TO ORDER: Mr. Akermon called the meeting to order at 6:07 PM MINUTES: Mr. Ervin made a motion to accept the minutes of the April 4, 2013 meeting; seconded by Mr. Frey — motion passed unanimously. OLD BUSINESS: - There was no old business. NEW BUSINESS - Mr. Ervin asked about a Leadership Class — Mr. Thompson said that it was Leadership 1,2,3 from the National Fire Academy. Three fire fighters — B. Ervin, TJ Kiesler and A. Veals attended the class and thought that the instructor should be invited to a meeting to discuss the class with the commissioners. - Mr. Thompson noted that he just had a Driver's Program for new drivers and was looking at doing more training — but it was going to be more difficult due to the budget cuts. The Commissioners said that they would be willing to partner with the Fire Department in paying for speakers and /or classes. r - Mr. Ervin would still like to work with the Louisville Fire Department but due to their schedule — it would have to be at a later date. - The Union did not have any suggestions for the Commission in reworking rules /laws /applications — they were waiting to hear what the Louisville Department had to say. It was requested that they submit anything to the Commission by the June 6 meeting. - Mr. Akermon asked about any issues that came up during Thunder. The Chief noted that there were 13 different agencies working together during that day. There were 7 suspicious packages dealt with and they had 2 ATV's for problems on the walking bridge. The National Resource Center had a command post and could see where all of the units were. A lot of contingency planning had been done. The Fire Department hosted a NASBO (National Course for Boat Operation) that was well received. Another class will be offered on 5/20/2013. 3 fire fighters attended a strenuous River Rescue class in South Bend. On June 3 the department will be picking up a new truck. - The Chief is continuing to look at the performance reviews and will work with leadership so that they can take ownership of the process. He spoke with Ms. Gross regarding a training class for his officers' on how write the review. Mr. Frey requested that the reviews all be dated. - Mr. Miles noted that due to the expansion of River Ridge and the new bridge a new fire house might have to be considered. The Chief is currently developing a list of resources that he feels will be needed. Jeffersonville is currently at the bottom of the list of ration per capital to the number of fire fighters. - Mr. Gavin will be retiring in August — there are currently no plans on replacing him. Mr. Case and Mr. Lee will be retiring in 2014; Mr. Johns says he will be retiring in 2014, however his paperwork states 2015.
