FIRE DEPARTMENT MERIT COMMISSION

The Jeffersonville Fire Department Merit Commission held a Regular Meeting on
Thursday, April 1, 2010 in the Second Floor Conference Room, 500 Quartermaster
Court, Jeffersonville, IN. The following were present:
David Martin -President
Jeff Frey -Board Member
Lyn Ackermon -Board Member
Ron Glass -Secretary/Treasurer
Mary Sue Ellenbrand -Stenographer
Greg Clark -Attorney
GUESTS:
Members of the Jeff Fire Department
David Kaskie, President of the Jeffersonville Firefighters Local 558
CALL TO ORDER:
Mr. Martin called the meeting to order at 6:07 PM.
MINUTES:
Mr. Martin presented the minutes for the meeting of March 4, 2010. Mr. Frey made a
motion to approve the minutes of March 4, 2010. Mr. Glass seconded. Motion passed
unanimously.
APPLICATION:
Mr. Clark reported that he has made the necessary revisions to the application for new
hires. The application is now in the Human Resource Office and on line on the City's
website. Applications will be due Apri130, 2010 at 4:00 PM.
The written test will take place on May 22, at 9:00 AM. There will be an alternate
date for the applicants that cannot make that date. Those applicants will need to go to
Indianapolis.
June 12 and 13 -Applicant interview
June 19 -Backup date.
June 21 and 22 -Promotion interviews
June 28 -Promotion test - 9:00 - 12:00 at the Jeff Fire Department Headquarters
The Human Resources Department will do the background checks.
GRIEVANCE:
Mr. Greg Hammond filed a grievance regarding an "annual fitness test" related
dispute that occurred on March 4th. Since the filing of the grievance, the union has gone
through the grievance process to reach the merit commission for a review of the fitness
related dispute.
Step #1 -Sergeant Hammond aggrieved on March 4th, grievance filed -March 5th
Step #2 and Step #3 - Loca1558 Executive board voted and passed -March 10th
Step #4 -Met with fire administration -March 22"d
Step #5 -Written response received March 30th
Step #6 -After receiving the written response from the fire administration on 3/30/2010,
the next step in the grievance process is to have the dispute heard at the Fire Merit
Commission's "next regularly scheduled meeting for review".
The commission recommended after much discussing tabling the issue until the next
meeting.
Mr. Frey made a motion to table the issue until the next meeting. Mr. Glass seconded.
Motion passed unanimously.
ADJOURNMENT:
Mr. Martin asked if there was any additional business. Hearing none Mr. Glass made
a motion to adjourn the meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:52 PM.
